"Newb here"
« on: November 14, 2010, 12:15:06 AM »
Just wanted to introduce myself and say how glad I am to have found this sight. My name is Mike and I'm an older player for our church. Been playin for a long time but mostly in the old school vineyard and newer Hillsong format. Also been praying for the Lord to bring us a new younger bassist as the leader is starting to want to do some of Israel and the new breeds tunes. Alas I'm still in the position and I'm no Terrance Palmer who is just an awesome gospel player as are many so please bear with me if I ask some dumb questions about the style. Again really glad I found this site!

Welcome!!!  It sounds like you have lots of knowledge, gained from many years of experience, that you can contribute to the room.   8)

Hey arthur that just made me think of Provers 27:17 (Young's literal translation) "Iron by iron is sharpened, And a man sharpens the face of his friend."

I love this place :)

Thanks for the Welcome .....and now to my first question. I'm currently playing a Lakland 5502 and noticed its a lot of work...at least on my Bass to get the right "sound". Its close but missing something. Went to our local GC which is not my favorite place but heard they have the MTD Kingston bass which I heard some guys doing gospel on Youtube....they dont sell them anymore. They did have a 6er Ibanez sr series with the bartlini pickups..used ...kinda hammered but it definatly had a gospel sound. A really fast neck too.  Low in price but it needs some work...previous owner was not kind to her. A couple new knobs and battery case cover plus a good cleaning should do. I'm no sixer player....was wondering if its hard to make the transition .....I know I will have to start learning more chords :) if I make this move but I hear a lot of that in this style anyhow. I guess I'm just asking if this would be a good gospel bass. I dont see many Laklands in this style.

Regarding the BLUE TEXT..... You wouldn't happen to be in the Detroit area would you?  The Southfield GC has a used Ibanez 6er that felt pretty good.  Wonder if we're talking about the same bass.

As for your Lakland / MTD question....I used to own a 55-02 fretless.  I was impressed with it and would have used it more if I had not come across a better fretless.  Haven't played too many fretted ones, but I get the feeling that they are sorta close to a Music Man vibe.  I consider the Music Man to be a pretty decent gospel bass.  The MTD basses are imho outstanding gospel basses.  Everything from the Kingston to the Z to the USA series of basses.  You can't go wrong with an MTD for gospel.  I think you could still rock the Lakland pretty good, though.

Better off waiting for DWBass or DDWilkins to weigh in on how well Lakland works in gospel and in a church setting in general.

Peace,
James

No James I'm not in Detroit. Out here in So Cal. Lucky for you or I would be buggin you to show me some stuff LOL! Part of its me. I'm so used to rollin off the treble as our soundguy says its too bright, that, along with I need to develop that sound in my fingers. Havent woodshed in a while so I'm back to practicing like when I was a kid as the Lord has given me some free time in my later yrs.

im surprised to hear that about the lakland. i played my cousins lakland and was really impressed by it. the only reason i didnt get one because the ones ive seen are close to $1K and im holding my money to do upgrades on my current basses (although i did see one for about $400 in GC a while back that i regrettably shouldve just pulled the trigger on even though it wasnt the one i wanted). I dont think they would be a problem in gospel, but everyone has their own opinion as to what they want to hear from their bass, so i guess its not that surprising.

Check out Dale Black.

Personally, I think the 5502 is perfect for Gospel.  Let the soundguy adjust to your sound.

I don't believe in the "this bass for that" concept, (as in the best bass for gospel etc). Pick a bass that plays well and sounds good and go for it! For everyone who plays a 5/6 string Smith/MTD, I can show you somebody killin' on a 4 string Fender/Peavey/Lakland/Sadowsky/precision/jazz/bongo......(you get the picture  ;)). I personally always thought of myself as being innovative and willing to try something new rather than following and sound like everybody else. (Sometimes it works-sometimes it don't). I like what others are doing, but I don't want to be just like them. I guarantee you if a well known gospel bassist (Fred/Thad/Terrence/Maurice) came out smoking on an upright or used a pedal driven distorted tone and the song was well received, a lot of others would head in the same direction. Innovators by definition go against the grain.

i totally agree with you that there is no best, everyone has their own preference (if you ask some organists, the best bass for gospel is their foot. lol)

i believe how you want to sound and what you do/where you play has more bearings on what you pick than anything. For the person that only plays on their rig, get whatever you want that works. But versatility (having several tonal options, which every bass isnt able to give) is a big deal when having to plug up into direct boxes or someone elses rig who's picky about their settings (or have a set up that really doesnt give u much settings to adjust). Of course many people jump on bandwagons, but some brands/basses do give certain people exactly what they are looking for.
For my God... let "Golden Axe" prevail.

:D(if you ask some organists, the best bass for gospel is their foot. lol) Man when I read that I was rollin.....so true. And I agree with everything thats been said. Part of it is listening and hearing for me. Thanks for the vid of Dale playing. I stand corrected. I've been favoring the back P.U. more lately and it seems to give me better tone. Saw that he does too in his Vid. He can play for sure. Lowered the action a little and it is making a difference. I've had it a few years and a good setup is probably ovedue when the funds are in.
