Pedals Question
« on: November 07, 2010, 02:55:58 PM »
Hello LGM Fam, it's been a while but I continue to practice hard and progress.

I had a Boss TU-2 tuner and a Boss EQ 7 pedals.  Then I bought a SansAmp BDDI pedal I found locally for $99.  It's a great pedal and it gives my Affinity V a much better sound.

I plug into a Fender Rumble 15 at home for practice and into a Peavey 1x15 at church when I get a chance to play.

How should my signal chain go?  Right now I go bass->TU-2->SansAmp->EQ-7->amp.  Is this the right order?  I'm planning to get an Acousting B200 or B450, and those amps come with a six-channel EQ, so I'm finding I may not need the EQ-7 after all.

Comments are welcome and thanks.

sorry I can't answer your question

but I did want to say Hey! I was actually thinking about you awhile ago. It seems like you are still playing the bass :) which is great!

Hello PH,

yes, I try to practice at least an hour or two every day.  I think I'm on this for the long haul and because I don't have any professional goals other than enjoying the journey there's no pressure.

Just in case, I recently left Facebook since I found myself spending way too much time in there.  My wife left first and a few weeks later I followed suit.  Since you were in there as well as many other LGMers, I wanted to share that.  Just that Facebook wasn't solving any problems for me but creating a few, mostly time-wise.  I appreciate you remembering me, even all the more if you remember me during your prayer time.  I'll try to do the same.

So far work is good!  Staying busy and trying my best, and every now and then our MOM taps me to play on a Sunday.  On the downside, I had an audiogram performed and came out with significant hearing loss (on the high spectrum) so I am now looking for ways to protect what's left and to make every moment that I can play my bass count.  I am grateful for God's faithfulness.

Blessings, and hopefully I'll keep y'all updated on my musical progress on this forum.

I was thinking about buying the SansAmp BDDI pedal, looking for more tone options with my fender passive pups on my jazz
bass. You said this pedal gave your bass a better sound, could u explain more about the before sound and the after sound of your bass using the SansAmp BDDI pedal. Some of the functions of the  SansAmp BDDI pedal that u like or don't like about it.

Thanks !

Hello Wesley,

I think this pedal adds a certain "character" to my bass...  I don't know how to define it, but I like to refer to it to as "angry-ness"... a certain "growl" that the bass does not have in itself.  The DI is very clean and the times I've used it it has been better than mic'ing the amp (the mic used at church is not very good or I don't know what the sound guy is doing, but I don't like it; using the DI sounded better, IMO).  With the DI I can use the amp as my monitor.

Note that this pedal produces a "scooped" sound, and it has no mid-control.  For that you need to get the SansAmp ParaDriver DI.  The SansAmp folks say you can cut treble and bass and produce a bell-shaped sound curve that way.  I use the Boss EQ-7 after the SansAmp for this purpose (hence my posting here).

Has "phantom" power. The blend I always have it @ 100%.  Between the "presence" and "drive" you have multitude of possibilities for defining your sound.  I started with the "Ampeg SVT" sample settings and tweaked from there.  I wished it had an effects loop and a headphone out (for late-night practice) like the EBS MicroBass II, but the EBS @ $400 is prohibitive for me.

It is not a secret that many people like this pedal, and for $99 I couldn't pass it up.  I would not hesitate to buy again at full price if I lost this one.

Another good option I've heard about is the Sadowsky external pre-amp.  I've heard that it can make just about any bass (cheap or expensive) sound "better", but "better" is a matter of opinion.  And of course it all depends on the type of music you play and the sound you're after.

I'd go to GC and try it out, or buy it and if you don't like it return it within 30 days.

I hope this helps you in your decision.

Asahel,

Always good to see that you are hard at it.  You always ask good questions.  Getting a Sansamp BDDI for $99 is an excellent deal!  The chain as you have described it works fine if your are playing through your amp.  If you are playing into a PA system, you want everything in your signal chain BEFORE the DI box.

Peace,

James

Thanks Asahel for replying to my question about the SansAmp pedal. It was very helpful and  I will be purchasing one in the
near future.
