Kent Armstrong and Nordstrand Pickups
« on: December 13, 2010, 05:09:36 PM »
Does anyone have any opinion on either or both. I know Jeremy does in the Stank Nasty and J your input would be great too. Need this feedback b/c thinking of having Dave Pushic build me a 5er and wanted to try something different. Any input is good fam!

I have Nordstrands in my Lakland JO5. Nordies are fantastic pickups but are very pricey!!

First and foremost, Dave builds some beautiful basses and his prices are reasonable.  As far as the pickups are concerned, I don't think you can go wrong with the Nordies.  I think there are a couple of threads out there with a lot of convo about Nordies.

I've had both in the stank nasty and this is my opinion.

If you're looking for a raw(think jazz bass raw) throaty sound then get the Nordstrands.  if you're looking for a modern sizzling Slicing through your soul like a knife through hot butter sound, then go with the kent Armstrong ken smith wound pickups.

Another option are Barts leaning more towards the modern tone spectrum.

Man, these Kent Armstrongs are much cheaper than the Nordies. I might need to consider these for my 6 string. I just got to find a price for them. What preamp would you suggest with these pickups?

You can't go wrong with the Nordie preamp...I have it in my 5er.  The sound is amazing!!!  If you know any luthiers, they can get the equipment at a cheaper price.

Definitely going to go with a Nordy Preamp. Still up in the air about pups though. Any Suggestions? I'm open to anything but Barts. (never had a good experience with them)

Just not a fan of Barts. they sound great but they sound like Barts. I haven't come across a bass with Barts where I can hear the wood. All I hear are the coloration of the Barts. Not very transparent to me at all IMHO. Nothing against them personally. They're great but dont fit my application.

I recommend getting your hands on a roscoe bass and trying it out to see if you like their electronic combination.

I forgot about the Roscoes. They really sound transparent to me just like the MTDs. I think that the non-handmade products that use Barts, allows the barts to color the tone. So I can see where you're coming from mysterman.

the non-handmade basses that use barts typically use the Korean Mk series which are extremely blah sounding to me.
