Is there a such thing as a polictially correct prayer?
« on: December 15, 2010, 10:40:17 AM »
If you were to ask to pray at a large gathering of a number of different denominations of christans how would (assuming you would) say your prayer?

Are there particular phrases/topics you might leave out of your prayer?

I'm personally leaning towards the lord's prayer, I'm pretty sure all denominations are okay with the lord's prayer.

The Lord's prayer is the model for praying. So,  I'd pray a prayer that followed that model.

I wouldn't change a thing.

If they asked me to pray, I'd assume they understand what a prayer from someone of my faith may contain.  Of course, a public event prayer is different than prayer meeting prayer, or at home on my knees prayer.  But I wouldn't leave out any references to God or Jesus or the Holy Spirit, or anything else that is typically included in my prayers for fear of offending someone.

I wouldn't speak in tongues... lol! Or at least I hope not... :D

My religious professor said he was once asked to pray at a Methodist church (I think that's the denomination he said) and he prayed to God as "Mother". He said people were questioning him about it afterward.

Didn't Andy Stanley receive some flack for his prayer with President Obama? I just don't understand how you can critique someone's prayer.

This is my answer. If you ask for ME to do something, you know what you're getting. If you don't want what I got, ask someone else.

I've also served as a chaplain for a few public organizations and prayed at many political events... rallies, forums, debates, etc.  I don't think I've ever changed a thing.

That reminds me of that YPJ song, let's see if I remember it:

This civic group asked me to come over and pray
They said say anything, but the name of Jesus, please don't say
*can't remember these words* said that's okay
cuz a prayer without Jesus is like a sandwich without miracle whip
*something like* I'ma say his name til I'm dead and they ain't buried me yet...

LOL, that was horrible, but I love that song :D

My old pastor was chaplain for the fire dept and he said they specifically asked Him for a general prayer and he was able to do it because he said something like and we ask all of these things in the name of the true most high God, and some other stuff I dont remember that referenced Jesus without saying the name. Im torn whether this was true compromise or was it just being pc while still representing, but then again that may be why he is my old pastor, lol

If you're outside the church;Any name is OK-EXCEPT JESUS!!!

To me;the "most high god crap" is just that-mucho crapola.

JESUS said"deny ME before men;I'll deny you before FATHER!",That chills my blood that LORD would Not mention my name!

SO-best advice I've got?

Listen to AND speak as HOLY SPIRIT leads!!!

Listen to LL!!

Listen to Ness!!

pray in JESUS NAME-who don't like it-tough!

The Only exception I've ever made is with some Jewish friends-grace -before lunch-"in THE MESSIAHS NAME".But;hopefully I was following the LORD,and the conversation got around to JESUS anyway.Since these folks know where I stand;and are hardened reprobates(pray 4 my Jewish friends!!!)-I think it may have emphasized JESUS even more -so!!I think I've done that all of 3 times.

As for my friends,at a temple function;4 of them were JESUS,JESUS,JESUS-all defaming LORD over a 10 minute conversation EVERY time they said HIS NAME;I just added 'LORD and SAVIOUR".By the end of the 10 minutes-all had their heads bowed at the TRUTH of CHRIST's NAME.

One of the other guys used to share office space with me.I walked in on him one day as he relished "preaching" to someone in hushed tones(I was in the next room) about how so baptists had the "greatest number of incest cases".Every chance-cat was always defaming anything pointing towards LORD.But his god-money and scientology;was "above reproach".Interestingly enough;his brother;another sci- guy died 3 months ago from cancer.Gary wanted him buried as a jew-from the temple! The guy had denied his jewish"faith" for 20+ years-but he wanted the ritual or something. My guess is Harvey now knows WHO JESUS is,and is crying out HIS NAME-JESUS,JESUS,JESUS-please help me and get me out of these flames and heat!!!

WORD says "we are to be stinking/smelling-the sweet aroma of LIFE(CHRIST in us)to those who will be saved;the stench of death to those who are Perishing!!"(physically + spiritually).
