No crime at all! But i'll give you some insight into what us "gospel cats" do...we use our laptops!...lol I don't do any recording sessions studio or live without music or charts on my laptop. Check this video and you'll see my laptop on the side of me! http://youtu.be/l-sHDghuYa4

Yeah, I've seen that alot.  I think there are two different perspectives in this thread.

1) is the church musician who, if you fumble through a song a little bit, nobody will chastise you for it (some may not even notice). And you can make up for it at the next service.

2) is the professional musician who, if you fumble through a song a little bit, you may not get a call back and may get a reputation for being un-prepared/un-professional.

That's you on bass?  Our band just learned this song last night.  We changed it a little at the end.  I like that lick you did at the end coming into the song.   What kind of bass were you using?

Oh yeah, your click at the end gave you away  ;)

Awesome idea, if you have laptop with an apple logo on it you could look even cooler, and also by using your laptop it looks like you're using some technological device to trigger your effects, so disguising you using notes!  ;D

Awesome!

@mjl422 Very good observation. In either situation you want to put forth the best effort you can.

@tewest86 Thanks man. That is me on bass and I was using a Tobias/Gibson Signature Series 6-string

@StooB Yep the click at the end definitely gave me away...lol I tell u what though, I didn't have to do one overdubb, fix or replay. Amen!...lol

i did that song for a concert. i listened and practiced that song until i could play it all the way through without the record even playing. couldnt get that run at 4:22 though. (was that on the laptop too? lol)

The downside about that is i can tell when folks are wrong, but they argue with me about it, and i just shut up until they go to the CD and see that i was right. why? cause its all in the dome because i sat with the song just that long.

You need to slap Transcribe! on your laptop and take that along with you to concerts L ;DL  ;)

I love one of the comments from that William McDowell youTube video...  'Mmmmmm. I think that drummer just made me a Christian.'

Ok, well I felt I should help out our brothers who can't get Basspicker's rudiculous end lick to He Is, and tab it out on a 5 string for your music sheets/laptop  ;)  The means slide to the next note.

I think I got the notes right at the beginning and hope that Basspicker doesn't mind me tabbing this out. Hope you have fun trying to nail it (believe me, to get it up to his speed this will take a few hours/days/a lifetime  ;) and Tewest, I want to see more videos  ;)

StooB, actually i put a post on here, and 6StringApprentice (he should be a Jedi by now) did a clip breaking it down. I had the notes, but there was NO WAY i could do all that in time. And that was the easier part. At that time i could not fluently move to the upper register of the neck and come back down. Just was nowhere near that level at the time. But trying to do the run put a couple of new moves in my arsenal that i use all the time. and I still practice moving around on the neck. So i might could nail the run now, although my preparation time needed to move to the upper frets to do a run is down from like 20 minutes to about 5. Still practicing.
For my God... let "Golden Axe" prevail.

Lol, I have just transcribed it, not played it so I'm with you, or most probably way behind  ;D

@StooB You almost got it man! You know, I think I'll post a video of me playing it and explaining it. Rather, trying to explain it...lol It'll be up mid-day today. Blessings.

Let me pull out my ipod and actually try to pick it apart.  This is how I learn, If I can't sing it then I can't play it.  It I can sing it then laying it out on the bass is easy.

Here's a video of Sharay using a chart.  Tell me if you think it effects the feel of the song.

We must strive to perfect our craft.  Reading is just as essential as listening.

I think this bout sums it up. Having both skills makes you that much more prepared for any situation.
