I think at least two.  You don't want to burn somebody out by never allowing them some time to breathe.  That goes for choirs and choir directors.  Whether you have two directors or a director and an assistant director, you need to have at least one weekend a month where the primary director can chill.

I'd say 2 or more. It's important to give the main director a break, but it's also important to give other people an opportunity to explore, develop, and perfect their gifts. Plus, it's important to plan for succession (who will take over in the main director's absence or departure?). Plus, different directors have different styles - some directors are better at directing certain kinds of songs while others are better at the other songs.
When you're in love you don't want to fall asleep bc reality is finally better than your dreams.

It all depends.  At my church I am the only choir director; however I teach some songs that don't require a director in the event I am out that week.  When I worked with my college choir, I always had an assistant director as college helped groom me to be the director that I am today.

Seems the answer is clear by now, and as the old adage says "Two heads are better than one".

Just listen!

Well stated!

We had 2. We are down to 1 and 2 in training.

We have always had 2 to 4 over the years.

The only thing that I don't like about having more than 2 directors, is that you get that comment, "well when so and so directs" I don't appreciate that when I direct

IN MY OPINION I ONLY THINK YOU NEED ONE...
CAUSE EVERYONE DIRECTS DIFFERENTLY ONE DIRECT SIGNALS YOU TO STAND MAYBE THE OTHER DONT SO PEOPLE GET CONFUSED QUICKLY...
I DO THINK A BACK UP IS FINE ONLY TO GET THROUGH THAT SUNDAY IF DIRECTOR IS NOT THERE.
I THINK A BACK UP DIRECTOR LEARNS BASIC SONGS THAT DONT TAKE MUCH.

BUT THAT CAN GO ANYWAY...
AND EVERYONE LOOKS AT IT DIFFERENTLY
AND DIFFERENT CHURCHES HAVE DIFFERENT NEEDS....

I guess it just depends on what works best. Personally My choir has 3. I have a main director and the other 2 are back ups. Whoever directs the choir selections will let someone else direct for offering and invitation. Although everyone may have a different feel or style we make sure we all use the same signals across the board, so that there is no confusion. It's been working fine for us for the past 11 years.
