Wow.  for just listening, Im actually listening to alot more gospel.  Kirk and Jon P have helped my faith in gospel music lol.  Im being amazed at how great Maurette Brown Clarke is.  For study, Im listening to alot of Joshua Redman and Michael Brecker as far as melodical playing.  Im also listening to alot of Hindi, Sudan and Mali music (not THAT Mali, like African Mali).  Im fascinated by world music, and feel that we as Americans are so arrogant when it comes to art and dont want to expand our horizons.  That goes double for Christians.  If it aint our style gospel, it aint anointed or wordly.  What are you going to say to those Romanians or Indonesian ppl that are saved?  Their music is wordly?  Thats just me though.  I have deeply vast musical tastes.  Like this:

† MALAYALAM CHRISTIAN SONG : DAIVA SNEHATHIN †

What other instruments do you play?

Instruments I will play in public and get paid to gig on:
Bass (duh), Piano, Drums, Tuba, Trombone

Instruments I have fundamental skill on:
Saxophone, euphonium, flute, trumpet, violin

I also hold a note from time to time in the event I have to lead P&W.  Ive come to believe my gift from God is, if I can hold it, I can play it.

Pretty stupid on many accounts.  You can't say that about DUKE on natl tv and not expect major backlash.  I understood he stated it as a thought he had as a youth, but I think he had to have expected that ppl would take that and run with it.  AND its just not true.  One thing he and ppl from "the hood" have to understand is that Duke is prestigious, not just for basketball.  You not getting up in Duke with like a 2.1 GPA.  Coach K is looking at more than basketball, because with Duke being as famous as it is, he gotta keep good books lol.  Unfortunately that is where alot of great ballers fall short.  Also Ive met Grant Hill and Elton Brand on many occaisions way back when they were players.  Them dudes aint no preppy, sell out type cats.

XD, man I lol'd so hard. That's going on my hard drive. *smh*

How did you decide to learn to play the bass?

I started on violin at this program called Duke Univ String School, which meets on Sat mornings during the fall and spring and has like 3 diff level orchestras.  After playing for about a yr my instructor who is a bassist, asked me to switch, mainly because there were no string bass players and I picked up fairly quickly.  I stopped going, and like 5 yrs later decided I wanted to play bass guitar.  Noone in the community would show me anything so I basically taught myself.

Is that a day or a week?!?

One day.  A good day for me usually is coming in to work with a free morning til lunch (about 2 hrs), an hour before I leave work, and unless Im spent, usually every day from about 10 til midnight.  And that doesnt include if I have a gig/rehearsal or not.  I play ALOT.  Im actually playing right now between typing lol.

Praise Him!

What's next for BBG after the military?  Or do you think you will be a career military man?

I only have a bout nine yrs to go, so God willing, I will see it through.  The military is one of the best things that ever happened for me.  Music will always be with me in some form, but I do plan on getting some kind of masters in psychology or counseling and working with youth, maybe in the school system.  I have an passion for wisdom and educating.

When learning a song, how do you approach it?

1.  Structure
2.  Progressions
3.  Licks

I do each of these independently.  When I listen for the structure, I dont even pay attention to what the bass player does.  Im just listening for verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, etc.  Then I chart out the chord structures in my little "gig notation".  Licks and bass things that stand out come last.  I like this order because you may not always have time to get everything super tight, so if you got the basic structure and where the song is going, you can get by with not knowing special licks, ad libs, blah blah blah.
