Contemporary Gospel Rock Songs with a Baptist Twist?
« on: April 11, 2011, 03:45:43 PM »
I have a youth choir with an electric guitarist as my only musician. I asked him what he already knows how to play on his guitar and he gave me mostly slow-mid tempo rock songs of course.

1. So this is a southern traditional, every now and then contemporary, style church. I personally don't care what the genre is, as long as Christ is Lord, but what songs can edify the talents of this guitarist and not lose the congregation?

2. At the same time, it's a youth choir so the songs can't be too complicated or so old fashioned that the kids feel 40yrs old lol. The first song that came to my mind so far was "I Need You" by Tye Tribbett, but I sure could use some more suggestions.

3. Keyboard chords are easier to find than guitar tabs. Any ideas on how to use what I find in the keyboard or bass section to help this young man learn a song? If I did want to do some Georgia Mass, will the dynamic of the music get lost in translation if I replace the keyboard with guitar?

Tye Tribbett has a slower song which starts out on Guitar - only two chords - E and F#m - very simple call/response

Tye Tribbett & G.A. "EverythingTo Me"

[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/t/tye_tribbett/everything.html ]

Everything
You're everything to me
Everything
You're everything to me
Life and breath
You're everything to me
You're my peace
You're everything to me
Joy in sorrow
You're everything to me
Hope for tomorrow
Master, savior
Ruler, redeemer
Provider, shelter
Healer, deliverer
Father, protector
Provider, savior
Jesus, jesus
Jesus, jesus
Jesus, jesus
Jesus, jesus
You're everything to me
You're everything to me
You're everything to me
You're everythihg to me
You are everything that I'll ever need
You are everythihg that I'll ever need
You are everything that I'll ever need

You are
You are everything that I'll ever need
Oh, you are everything that I'll ever need
You are everything that I'll ever need
You are
You are
You are

Excellent choice, Betnich.

Israel Houghton also does songs that are guitar-friendly.  And a lot of old-time Southern gospel is blues-guitar oriented.  Maybe changing the beat a little would keep it from sounding too old-fashioned.
