Connecting Bass Amplification
« on: April 18, 2011, 12:20:28 PM »
Hello
dose any one know how to connect bass amps together?  Example how would i / or can i use another bass head on a combo cabinet.  Could i run a cable from the out put jack of the external head back in to the input jack of the amp where you would plug your instrument into, have the external head be my master, on the combo amp make all tone flat.

I used to bypass the preamp in an SWR Redhead that I used to own a long time ago.  It was pretty easy to do because I believe they made accommodation for that.  Does your combo have an XLR input for a line in?

I just had to try this, crossing my fingers. Yes! It works. Just as you stated, speaker cable from external on amp head to instrument input on combo amp. Bass plugged into instrument input on external amp head. The external head is putting out at least twice the power to the internal speaker of the combo and wow it made a huge difference. I didn't have it on long so I am not sure of the consequences for doing this for extended periods of time.

DO NOT plug a speaker output into anything but a speaker.

If you want to slave you combo amp and use your head as a preamp you need to look for either a

preamp out
DI or xlr
effects send
Line-out

on your head and a

power amp in
Line in
Effects return
or lastly the bass input.

on your  combo.

Yeah all line levels should work, line out, DI, effects loop, stuff like that, headphones are usually hotter than line level especially in pro audio but most of the time it's not a problem. You just have to be careful, you can hear pretty easily when you are overloading something.

Most line signals are a couple mW at most and even the smallest amplifiers can put out enough juice through it's speaker out to fry, die and lay to the side the front end of most amps.
