Fasting....
« on: October 14, 2008, 08:40:29 AM »
If you are on a fast, are you not supposed to tell people what you are fasting FOR, or that you are actually on a fast?

Is it possible to be on a personal fast and one with the church?

The bible says don't appear unto men to fast, meaning, don't be looking all deep and ceremonious and trying to bring attention to the fact that you are fasting.  Go about your regular day, but first anoint yourself and pray and then on the inside meditate and pray while you work or do whatever it is that you have to do.

There's a corporate fast with the church, and then there's a fast where you just do it by yourself.  I've done it a few times with friends.

I don't think it's wrong to tell someone, it just depends on your motive in telling it.  Are you telling it so they will think you are really deep or spiritual?

I was on a fast not too long ago, and my Pastor's Wife is very insistent about making you get something to eat.  So she kept telling me to go get a plate, and I kept saying no.  After a while, I just told her I was on a fast.  Of course, then she understood.

It's not something that you broadcast, for a lot of reasons, but mainly I think because a primary motive for announcing a personal fast is just a lot of pride, so the old saints used to teach us to keep quiet about it.  You don't want to open any doors for the enemy to sabotage your efforts.

Of course, the corporate fast would be different as the whole group would be on it together.  I kind of like those because then I can call my friends and we talk about the Word of God and help strengthen each other to go through.  The accountability helps you stick to your committment.

If you break your fast, meaning you eat something or drink something ahead of time, Can you get back on it?

I'd say, yes.  I struggled with fasting for a long time, and the worst thing to do is give up because you're not as strong as you'd like to be.  That's with anything, the only way we're defeated is if we stay down.

Would you start from day 1 or would you pick up from where you left off?

I guess it depends.  The important thing is to be open and honest with God about where you are and rid yourself of whatever guilt associated with where you dropped off.  Just pray sincerely and ask God for direction, tell him your desires and ask for his help.  I'm a witness that he knows your heart and he will help you.  Just keep believing and keep giving it your all no matter how bad you feel on the inside when you mess up.  The devil wants you to give up, so he brings guilt and frustration to try to make it seem hopeless.

If I was start again from day one, I would probably try it again maybe the following week, because if you keep starting over like every day or every other day, you'll be on a perpetual fast and never finish... that'll make you more likely to give up.

Yeah, lol.  Or put a work potluck or church bbq right smack in the middle of your planned fast.  He's a lie! LOL!

Ok, I have mixed feelings about a corporate fast. While I think that it is good for the church to be unified in its actions, I feel like fasting should be an individual thing between God and you. Like for example (and this is a entirely different subject) I disagree with preachers saying the church should give a certain amount when it's time for the offering. In my view that should be personal. I guess I just feel that the church should not make a corporate mandate to fast, it should be an individual thing. The biggest thing I believe should be a corporate mandate to do is pray, encourage, admonish and support one another.

There is much Biblical precedent for corporate fasting, sir. We should fast individually, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with corporate fasting... and on the contrary, there is plenty RIGHT with corporate fasting.

*putting in mind to take some time and get in the scriptures on the Acts church as it relates to corporate fasting*

Don't limit yourself.

The first reference that came to my mind was Esther. When Haman issued the order to to kill all the Jews, the Jews, led informally by Mordecai, fasted corporately.

I'm sure I can think of other examples.

The people of Nineveh made everyone and every thing fast when they found out God was about to destroy them.  There is definitely power in a corporate fast.  Problem is, today's saints are so weak and fleshly, half of them ain't even tryin' to be with one accord.  I don't know what it would take to get everybody serious about fasting at the same time, but I imagine it would produce great results for that group or organization, starting with unity within the group.

Yes, another good example.

And I agree. Very strong points.
