Seeing "Jumping the Broom" on Mother's Day?
« on: April 23, 2011, 02:44:16 PM »
"Jumping the Broom' is directed by veteren TV director Salim Akil (The Game, Girlfriends, Soul Food) and produced by Bishop TD Jakes.

This movie's all-star cast consists of Angela Bassett, Megan Goode, Loretta Divine, Paula Patton, Laz Alonzo, DeRay Davis, Mike Epps, Tasha Smith, and others.

I liked the trailer (except for this one song that sounded out of place).  I think this will be a good movie and my mom and I want to see it.  Are you going to see it?

Nope. I hate to type this most of the time when there's an all-Black cast, I stay away from the movie--especially all-Black B-list cast (minus Angela and, possibly, Loretta).

If Lorette, Angela, and Mike are in it, I definitely have to see it!

I only go to the movies once every few years when I can't get out of it. Last time I went was with Brittany in 2009. That said, I'm with Jonathan. :-\ I hate to admit it (especially in writing), but I just rarely find black movies or sitcoms or dramas or anything that really hold my interest. That's not to say they're not well-made or well done; it just doesn't tend to hold my interest. I think BBG hit on it in his Ask BBG thread when he said that most or all of our movies are about being black or some kind of spoken or implied black experience or culture. I'm not really interested in seeing that for 2 hours.

Yes, Brittany; it was... which is one reason I don't go to movies.

That's not to say they're not well-made or well done;

I'm saying that.  In fact, I have NO problem saying that.

If it's well-made or well done, I'll see it (best example, 'Soul Food' both the movie and the television series on Showtime).

I'm really not qualified to say whether they are or aren't because I just don't watch enough of them. I did see Soul Food (movie and series) and enjoyed them both.

For me, the turn-off is usually the subject matter.

I heard it was decent. My mom wants to see it. I have groupie love for Angela Bassett, so I wouldn't mind seeing her performance -- but I don't know if I'll press my way to the theatre for it. Might be a DVD wait unless my Mom really wants to see it.

I'm kinda ashamed to say... I'm not a fan of Angela Bassett's roles. I like her (lovvve, actually) as a woman, but her acting isn't great to me. She makes the same facial expressions, gestures, body language, and even has the same tone of voice in every single movie. It's like every character is a mix of Anna Mae and Bernadine. :-\ :D

That made me laugh.  :D

Maybe it's because I watched "What's Love Got To Do With It" so much as a child. I could pretty much recite that movie by heart.

But on the subject of black movies following the same trend, let me ask this -- Honestly, if "Inception" or "Black Swan" featured an all-black cast, would they be marketable? Do we as African-Americans predominantly relate to stuff like that?

Hey hey now, I love Angela, one of my favorite black actresses. I wouldn't fight over her though lol.

My all time favorite is Kimberly Reese. She is just.... Wow! Oh and Denzel.

Might see it - if I do, probably not on Mom's Day, maybe on $5 bargain day or wait for the DVD.

Lots put down Tyler Perry's work, but in these tough times I need a laugh, so am going to see the new Madea film after church Sunday...

;)

Many believe that his work continues the stereotypes of black people in America. But some feel that his work actually exposes the reality of life for blacks and that it is nothing but entertainment, something to laugh at.

You realize I own 'Inception', right? A good movie is a good movie.  A good movie with a great cast is a great movie. Color has little to do with it.

The problem, again, as LaRue has pointed out is that any time an all-Black cast is involved the theme is usually cultural as opposed to universal.

I can't see Spike Lee making something like 'Inception' starring himself, Denzel and Giancarlo Esposito. *kanyeshrug*
