radical solution for fixing the economy
« on: May 09, 2011, 11:51:05 AM »
I got this idea from Samoa.

Samoa to jump forward in time by one day

Quote
Samoa is located approximately halfway between New Zealand and Hawaii and has a population of 180,000 people.

Quote
Samoa will do this by switching to the west side of the international date line, which it says will make it easier for it to do business with Australia and New Zealand.

At present, Samoa is 21 hours behind Sydney. From 29 December it will be three hours ahead.

what if we abolished time zones?

Yes it would be weird working at midnight but for many places we already do that.

I understand where you're coming from, conceptually, but it wouldn't be too practical.

Why not?

your work hours if you required day light would just changed to ... 3pm - 11pm.

If you don't require day light your body would adjust just fine.

we like it, but a lot people already work at night so it is not impossible. and if you don't like the dark your hours would just change see previous post.

Now one of the pros to this situation is for your global companies. It is easier to schedule meetings, and work together.

Especially as we move more to the internet where it doesn't matter if the sun is up or not. if you say lets have a chat session at 2100 everyone knows what time you are meeting.

If you run a business and you say your hours for your business are 2:00 - 10:00. Everyone around the world knows when 2 - 10 occurs. So when someone from singapore calls there is no calculating to do.

Ideally it would be best if all business world wide simply worked 9-5. Or at least during those times. Some people would see the sun rise, others would see it set, but we all would have the same time.

One person making a change for their own personal economy can do it pretty easily.  But, what you're proposing is that tens of millions of people make that change.  But not only the individuals, but businesses as well.  For all of the positives that you propose that this plan would have, it would also create many negatives.  There are some businesses that thrive BECAUSE of the current system.  So, changing would actually have an adverse affect for them.  I can't quantify how many businesses would be adversely affected, but I'm willing to bet that it would be a significant enough number to justify keeping the status quo.

Must you always think outside the box?  >:( Some of us like the box. Mine happens to be nice and cosy, especially since i got some adhesive tape and plastic wrapping. Now the rain can't come into MY box...
