Good point. I really need to read the article because I have no idea what the point would be... I guess to serve as an incentive to keep kids in school? Kids do seem to get really excited about turning 15 so they can start driving, but maybe if they linked the driving to the graduation, fewer kids would drop out? I guess that's what they're thinking. I dunno. But you're right. Earning a diploma does nothing to increase one's driving ability...

I think that it sounds silly. But I do think that we should have stricter test and more training in order to get a license. These people out here cant drive for nuthin.

I don't think so, driving is a basic right. not everyone can handle school, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be able to drive.

I'm assuming that the reason they allow them to drive is because they are a big source of revenue to state, county and local governments and municipalities. Go into any traffic violations office orcourt in NY and a disproportionate amount of the people there, relative to the area's demographics, will be Hispanic. I cant tell if they are legal or not, but a lot of them are not.

That's what i said blyempowered. People have dropped out of school and gone to lead the world and invent things we rely on, but they cant drive?

Understand that if illegal immigrants aren't allowed to pay registration and go through the proper channels to be licensed, then they are driving our streets without documentation, without a license/registration, and without insurance.  If one of them hits you, you're out of luck.  I'd rather give that joka a license then have him driving around under the radar until he takes me out at an intersection, and then I'm laid up and can't even recoup the damages.

Yeah, but I just think as a nation we should do whatever possible to help "illegal" (I don't like that term but whatever....) immigrants get "legalized' into the nation, and that also include getting a license.

I'd rather they pay their share, or even an illegal tax on top of it, to cover registration/insurance/licensing... because otherwise they're driving anyway, and we're footing the bill.

No.  I understand we want people to graduate, but I'm not for punishing them by not letting them get licensed to drive.  If they drop out/don't get that diploma, they are probably just going to enter the work force, in which case a license will be helpful.  Choosing not to finish school is not the wisest choice, but the gov't doesn't have the right to punish you for it.

I just can't get with the concept of affording ANY privilege to someone who isn't supposed to be here in the first place.

I do, however, like Nessa's idea of hitting them with an "illegal" tax. Fwiw, though, in GA, most of the licensed illegals don't have insurance so even if they hit you with their licensed self, you're still outta luck.

To be honest, what I don't understand is how one government agency can extend a license to a criminal and NOT report that criminal to the authorities. ??? I would think there would be a way for the DMV to report it. (Which makes me think maybe the govt doesn't really care to fix this HUGE problem anyway).

Part of it is that most of those are state entities and immigration is federal.  Part of it is the gov't provides protection for people seeking certain services so they won't fear deportation.
