You knew Lytro was up to something, but with its infinite focus light-field powered camera out of the bag, how does it actually stack up in real life? In a word: novel -- you certainly won't be tossing your regular camera for this shooter, at least not in its current incarnation. Still the concept of shoot now, ask focus questions later is revolutionary, so hop on past the break for our initial impressions.

I don't fully understand, I thought this was already possible. Just take a picture with everything in focus and then blur out certain parts.

I must admit photography is not an area I know a lot about so please correct my misunderstanding

It's possible to get a wide focus area with a regular camera, but you would have to use a very small aperture, which does not let in much light, thus causing you to have to use a very slow shutter speed, which usually makes the photo blurry.

I'm assuming that this camera lets you do that without having to use a slow shutter.

As for blurring out the background, most point and shoot cameras can't really do it...some can under certain conditions, but it's not really easy. You really have to buy a dslr or special PnS to get that effect. Also, most people don't want to have to go into a program and add effects that you can get straight out of the camera that often does not look too real. Me, I don't like editing at all, I try to get everything right in camera.

Because having an out of focus background is so desirable by photographers, This camera will probably be very popular.
I could really use something like this in my camera, because I always end up with not enough of my photo in focus or getting the wrong part in focus.
