Which Job Would You Take?
« on: August 08, 2011, 06:30:51 PM »
I know I've asked a variation of this question before, but this time, I want to keep it simple and ask it in a different manner.

Assume that you have to enter a 20 year contract to work. You receive two job offers, one is the career you love so much that the "work" wouldn't really be work at all. The other, you know without a shadow of a doubt, you would hate. You would hate the work, the company, the boss, the colleagues, everything. You would just be miserable on that job.

The job you'd love is offering you $30,000 a year, with annual COLA increases. The one you know you'd hate is offering $150,000 a year, with the same annual increases.

Assuming all else is equal, and without making this super complicated with variables and loopholes, which would you choose, the job you'd hate or the one you'd love?
When you're in love you don't want to fall asleep bc reality is finally better than your dreams.

I guess that depends on  what you want most....money or peace of mind.  I would probably go for the one I hate.

I'd take the money.  I tend to find contentment in even the worst situations.

Assuming all else equal(hours, proximity to home, etc.), I would take the higher paying job.  The fact that I could provide/store up more for my family trumps all.  Some unpleasantness for 8 hours a day 5 days a week would be well worth it.

I actually had to do this. Of course not to this level (150,000).  But I did interview for two jobs at about the same time. when this happened I was working what I call "the first job that would hire me". It had terrible hours and did not pay well, but there was hope that I could move up if I "earned my stripes". It was  about a $30k paycut though. Anyways, I was applying for other things that may offer more immediate benefits (or even just benefits!). I got the second interview position 1st. It paid about $1k more a month than the current job--so I took it. I knew going in I did not like that line of work, but I had experience in that field and could command a higher salary/position because of it. Hated getting up every day--I knew I could do the work, but had no interest in it. 3 weeks later, the 1st interview called back, said they somehow got approval to cover salary for my position (that's a biggie). It paid about $500 less/mth than the new job I had just started. But I felt a connection to both the people I interviewed with and the mission of the firm. I would still be able to use my background/experience to serve in that capacity. As bad as I felt about leaving so suddenly, I did and to this day have been glad that I have. Although it pays less in money, it's made up for it and more in peace of mind, in my ability to serve my community, and my overall pleasure to get up and go in the morning. Never looked back!
Signed,

Buck P.

If the monetary difference wouldn't affect me in an adversely major way, I'd take the lesser of the two.  I'm sure with you being a woman of God that He would bless the work of your hands and cause you to increase in every way.  Not only that, the lower of the two would add years to your life on the back end.  The stress of the position you don't like would eventually affect your health down the road if not immediately.  I feel the second position would probably put you in a position where you are more freed up to do ministry.  Less worries about your work life more than likely would make you more comfortable doing other things for The Kingdom during the week both at and way from work.

I'd take the lower paying job if the satisfaction was also on a spiritual level as well... otherwise I'd go for the higher paying job.. as long as it didn't involve something that I felt compromised my spiritual values..  Bosses change.. colleagues come and go .. and after it is all said and done.. work is work.. even jobs you love can become tedious at times..  Who knows.. the people at the higher paying job might actually learn to read from the light that you shine with your walk..  Sounds like the fishing might be better at the higher paying job.
Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.

It really depends on why I would hate the higher paying job and the people I'm working for and with.  If it's an issue with me, then I need to woman up and take care of that. Some would hate a job because they actually have to "work."  :D Some would hate a job because it's stretching you, getting you out of your comfort zone...

Now, if that's not the case and everyone else is messed up, I'll be alright with the lower paying job.

What's getting me is that doggone 20 year contract. Ain't no way I'm gonna stay somewhere for 20 years and be miserable. If it were for like 5 years, I would probably take the higher paying job.

That's what's getting me, too.
