Directors - How do you rehearse?
« on: September 06, 2011, 10:39:26 AM »
Was curious about how other choir and music directors on LGM run their rehearsals.

Also:

Do you do sectionals?
How long/often do you rehearse per performance? If more than 1 hour, do you give breaks?
How many songs in your repertoire?
How much time do you spend on administrative things, devotionals, prayer, talking, etc. in rehearsal?

Thanks. Anything else you could think of would be a great help and encouragement...

Choir rehearsal varies because people do not like to show up for practice, so I have to pause practice until everyone gets there..  I do not have sectional leaders, but I will put that on my planning list..  My choir member does not believe in long-lasting practices, but I believe, "the longer our practices, the better we get!!  I do not do breaks because of short practices.. Last for 1:30 minutes!!  I have a lot for songs prepared for the choir to sing!!

The choir I direct only sings once a month, but we rehearse every week.

Do you do sectionals?
No sectionals.

How long/often do you rehearse per performance?
1 hr rehearsal, so no breaks....we've done 2 hrs before, but still didn't feel the need for a break.

How many songs in your repertoire? uh....alot, and learning' new ones every month. Probably 30 or so since i started directing them (2 years ago) and we learn 1-3 new ones each month.

How much time do you spend on administrative things, devotionals, prayer, talking, etc. in rehearsal?
Not a whole lot of time on extra things, as 60 minutes is not a lot of time as it is. We open in prayer, warmup on a hymn, and get to it.

.......so I have to pause practice until everyone gets there..

You've got to pull back the reigns on that, or it will get out of control...starting later and later...the ones that come on time will start to come late since it never starts on time anyways...its a ripple effect that is hard to get back on track once it starts to get derailed.

Start on time, even if its with a minimal number people. That lets them know that YOU are serious about being punctual, and that your are about their time. After a few rehearsals of that, the drifters may start to trickle in a little earlier. And of course, express your concerns of being punctual with them. Otherwise time is just wasted.

No.

About an hour or so. Only breaks when I have to change CDs.

How many songs in your repertoire?

Don't know the exact number.

How much time do you spend on administrative things, devotionals, prayer, talking, etc. in rehearsal?

Not much. Though talking will take up quite a bit of time if allowed.

When everyone cannot be in attendance. We only have six people. One voice missing throws off the balance.

No.

How long/often do you rehearse per performance?  About an hour If more than 1 hour, do you give breaks? Nope you have to realize that people are just getting off from work, they still have to eat, bathe their kids etc... so if you give them a break then they'll tip out of the door.
How many songs in your repertoire? I just started with the choir I direct so I think we have about 15 songs. They have songs they've done with a previous director/musician and I approach those with extreme caution. The old me would just dismiss their "songbook" but out of respect for the history that came before me every now and then I'll let them sing an oldie but goldie for me. You should see how those fellas perk up and sing out. Honestly they know if it sucks they'll never sing it again...
How much time do you spend on administrative things, devotionals, prayer, talking, etc. in rehearsal? I have a choir president who opens up the rehearsal and closes it. He makes announcements, he calls the choir members, he communicates with the Pastor about upcoming events, he reminds the guys about the attire... I got it made.

Thanks. Anything else you could think of would be a great help and encouragement...
