ESP LTD D-5 Bass
Why it's best: Originally a company that made components for custom instruments, ESP is now focused on its line of quality imports, one of which is the LTD D-5.

Yamaha BB615 Active Bass
The BB615 is a reissue of one of the basses that established Yamaha as a leader in the field, and the addition of a fifth string is icing on the cake. It resembles a Fender, but the wider body and specially designed pickups with a 3-band active EQ give it a sound of its own. Though the scale is 34”, an innovative extended fifth-string saddle adds sufficient tension to bring out the lowest notes. And it’s even more of a bargain than it was in the day.

Schecter Omen Extreme 5
"Omen" is an evil-sounding name for such a nice bass. Similar in design and build to basses costing twice as much, the Omen Extreme-5 has a 24-fret, 35” scale neck, a mahogany body topped with flame maple, a pair of humbuckers and a 2-band Active EQ. Schecter markets to rock and metal musicians, but a bass of this caliber is at home in just about any situation.

Traben TRAC5 Chaos
Traben’s claim to fame is the massive bridge that comes standard on their basses, offering unbelievable sustain and tone advantages. The TRAC5 Chaos has a lightweight basswood body, a pair of humbuckers with 3-band active EQ, and a 35” scale, 2-octave neck. Pretty exceptional for the money.

Steinberger Spirit XT-25 Standard Bass
t just a little more than 3’ long and 6” wide, the Spirit XT-25 is possibly the most portable long-scale bass available. Made from a single piece of hard maple, it features two EMG passive humbuckers and Steinberger’s patented double-ball-end bridge design with it’s ultra-efficient high ratio tuners. There’s even a folding leg rest so you can play it sitting down.
