Poof! Now there's the cloud.
« on: September 30, 2011, 09:28:35 PM »
All my stuff in the computer cloud??  Can I get behind that?  Questions that I have asked myself since the new tablet by Amazon came on board.(or will come on board soon) The Amazon Kindle Fire.  At $199.00 it is supposed to be a serious threat to unseat the I-Pad.  This will be done by accessing the cloud where many features reside, sufficient to challenge Apple's apps. And also allowing for great storage possibilities.

All this being considered by one who used to carry drinking water to the house in a bucket and study by lamplight.  Seriously, what do you think of the cloud as applies to computers of all types?  I recently purchased a tablet(Toshiba Thrive)at what I considered to be a good price.  No cloud but very comprehensive. I think I am done.  However, I am still interested in what is out there.  Any comments?

I'm not an iPad owner yet, but considering all of the music and worship-related apps available for it, I won't be looking at anything else as nothing else compares nor competes with it.

The Kindle Fire looks impressive on paper and due to its price, but there are a few missing details that are in the fine print:
no camera
no microphone
no 3G
7" screen
limited to Amazon marketplace (not Google)
8G of storage
modified Andriod OS and may be incompatible w/ many Android Apps
no cable sync/PC wire connection

All those shortcomings and more hardly make for a serious threat to the iPad. The Nook Color, maybe.

And apparently the Cloud domain is nice because you a) don't have to store everything always on your device and b) if you accidentally delete something from your device, just go get it back from the Cloud.
Music theory is not always music reality.

The cloud is cool as long as you always have access to the internet.

At my company, we are in the process of moving our email system to microsoft exchange, which basically means that all of our email is stored on microsoft's server and our users can access their messages from home or their phones and tablets. The cloud also allows their messages to be synced with what's on their phone and their mobile device, so they only have to delete a message from one device, and it won't show up anymore on the other.

We were going to stop buying PCs and put everything on the cloud, but they decided against that for some reason.

I think we will see a lot more cloud computing in the near future. Why pay employees to manage your email system when you can a third party company do it for a fraction of the cost?

Free life search? That has many implications when you think about it.  Not all of them good.  It will take me a minute to wrap my brain around that one. I wonder if you can retrieve all your data(permanently and totally) from the cloud if you make a change.  It will be interesting to see where this goes.

I honestly believe that everything is Big Brother accessible anyway. I'm not typically prone to paranoia, but in this case, I'll take the label if I have to. I truly believe, legislation, warrant or not, if they want it, they'll get it.

I just don't trust the cloud for sensitive files.

Me neither...  :-\

I dont know... those Android tablets are pretty nice.. but the Ipads are pretty good I must admit. Those things you mentioned would be killers for me for the Fire..
Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.

Once your info is out there its out there. Companies make backups so your info is still there atleast for a time which is based on how the company handles backups. Meaning at some point they get rid of the old backups after a certain number of months or years.
