Why not store oil above the engine?
« on: October 09, 2011, 08:52:37 AM »
I know there are plenty of reasons why you probably shouldn't do this. But nevertheless I still wonder what would happen if you installed an engine upside down, so that the oil pan is above the engine?

I know some engines just place a check valve after the oil filter to keep everything lubricated when the engine is off.

I assume this could cause problems in the pistons .... maybe

probably a lot more false alarms if you did that because if just a little oil got on the engine you'd see smoke which is an immediate sign of trouble.

And any liquid will find a way out, so having it just above the ground is probably the best anyway.

Heat rises.  One purpose of oil is to cool parts of the engine.
