Is it a sin to be bored?
« on: November 16, 2011, 10:39:31 AM »
I was reading an article (http://nwbingham.com/2011/09/the-sinful-tragedy-of-boredom/) that says it's a sin to be bored, because "To be bored is to fail to see the many and varied good gifts God has given us, not the least of which is in creation."

Do you think it's a sin to be bored?

I don't think I'd call it a sin.  I do think laziness is a sin, and it is sometimes labeled as boredom.  I think a truly bored person does need to seek God's direction, because he certainly has something for us to do, and we should be interested in finding and doing it.

No!

And this is your second "bored" thread. Ever since your first one, I've been afraid to even utter the word "bored".  :'(

LOL.

All unrighteousness is sin. I've never called boredom a sin, but I do think it's pretty deplorable. I don't think very highly of people who frequently say that they're bored. Maybe I'm just really closeminded about it. To me, there's ALWAYS something to do, so I just don't understand boredom. Plus, my mind is always moving, so I could be biased.

I just don't get it though. Read a book, paint something, clean something, rearrange furniture, memorize scripture, pray, go visit someone, write a letter, take a walk, play a game, visit a friend, bake bread, cook a meal, clean out the fridge or garage, go to the gym, teach yourself a new hobby. There's just ALWAYS something to do. I truly don't understand boredom.

But is it a sin? I think that's a stretch.

I think a better question would be -- what happens when the work you're doing becomes "boring"? So, it's not an issue of being lazy or stagnant, but it's an issue of the work you're doing just not interesting you. That can be tough. Some of us call it school.  :D

I think boredom is often misdiagnosed... in fact, I need to look up the definition.   I think when work gets tedious, it's not always that we're bored with the work.  In the case of school, it's often that to get to what we want to do we have to endure learning other peripheral things that aren't directly related to what we are interested in doing.  That part is not what excites our passion, so we have to "bore" through it (maybe that's where the word comes from, lol), with shear determination and little or none of the enthusiasm that makes doing what we want to do easy, even if it's hard.

Well said, Ness and I agree. There's definitely a difference between being bored with what you're doing and being bored because you're not doing anything at all or "have nothing to do."

I'm quite bored with my job. Have been since Day 1. Indeed there's a difference. One could also be bored with their life, a class, a service, a book, a movie, etc. All that, to me, is different than being bored because you "have nothing to do" (which is the context in which I usually hear people use the word, and that's the 'version' of boredom I referred to in my post).
