Which is better tone-wise?

Which is better tone-wise? To have your amp mic'ed or to be plugged straight into a mixer. This is not restricted to church settings.

The general consensus among guitarists is that a mic’d amp sounds better........however, that's not always a feasible option and it is possible to get some good sounds with a direct out as well.

The reason i ask is that i am currently plugged directly into the church's PA system like this:

Amp -> Keyboard monitor amp -> House PA

My tone sounds thin by the time it goes through all these steps. I want to ask to be mic'ed but wasn't sure if it would solve the problem.

unless you are running some sort of modeler with cab modeling built in, the choice for better tone is ALWAYS to mic your amp.

I can tolerate a redbox or the like. You still have a live amp on stage and the sound guy still has control over the mix. Win/win.
