Unemployment Rate at lowest since March 2009......
« on: December 02, 2011, 07:49:09 AM »
Unemployment rate has dropped to 8.6% as U.S. economy gained 120,000 jobs in November. Story is on CNN and I think ABC.

I'm no longer moved by those reports. They skew the numbers to make them say what they want it to say and tell the story they want to be told. Bottom line is that too many folks are out of work (I do thank God for employment) and jobs are still far more difficult to come by than they were pre-recession.

We will have to wait and see what the rate will be after Macy's, Target, Wal-Mart, e.t.c start laying off the part-time workers they got for the Christmas rush.
The car, job, house wife/husband are not the reward, God is.

Good Point.

I would like to think something is happening on the positive side.  Since Black Friday grossed 52 billion dollars.  I think that was the most in history or perhaps a long time.  That either means, more people are working or just decided to live for today because it is what it is.

Those who studied economics would know that there is ambiguity around the definition of employment.

I'm glad at the way you've all responded. Fenix raised an especially good point.

I was so angry at how everyone here was going on about how the World Cup would provide employment for them. My heart was just broken because it's just hype for a few months and no one ever talks about the after-effects >:(
Only true winners are entrepreneurs who use the season as a catalyst to move their business to the next level. What percentage do entrepreneurs account for in any economy? :-\

I'm not trying to plant a seed of despondence, but we need to know facts from skewed stats. But at least the gov is trying to bring smiles to people's faces :)

Especially when you find out how outsourcing is factored in.

I have a feeling this is the answer. I don't think the sales were THAT good (granted I am going off of what I got anecdotally from my family members in the US, as well as friends).

I am still curious to see if folks used BF as a way to shop for Christmas on the cheap. It is possible that this Christmas season may see muted retail sales figures.

We ill wait and see.

That is the concern now.  Will people spend less later because BF grossed so much? 52 billion is a lot of shopping and we are just talking about BF.  If you account the whole weekend (BF through Cyber Monday)  you will probably see that figure close to doubling.

OAN:  I heard Apple accounted for 10% (5 billion) of the BF sales and they didn't even have major deals.

I like this dialogue..**keep going guys***

But seriously, official stats should reflect [or be very close to] reality.
I don't feel it's fair to define 1 month's work or outsourced labor[in the context that Doc raised it]  as employment- rather, they should have a separate stat for that. Then I would be comfortable enough to accept those figures as official.

Interesting article. BF this year topped $11.4 billion in sales. That is A LOT of money.

:o If i had money, I would buy Apple shares now. Their earnings forecast must be totally ahead of expectations by now.

Part of the issue is also this is the information age. Many jobs are not filled because there aren't enough qualified people. Manufacturing jobs which hire hundreds of people are being done by computers. Qualified IT people are just moving positions or shifted between companies and outsourced as stated. There are a lot of jobs being taken by foreigners. I think some of it is just bad planning catching up and some of it is intentional.
Vision without action is just day dreaming. I miss practicing.

Give me a minute to look. (It might take more than a minute because I don't really know how to look at that kinda stuff but I'm sure the buying price should be easy to find).

Actually, that wasn't hard at all.  Just needed to find the historic prices, which was easy.

I don't remember the exact purchase date, but I know it was just after my bday.... I just looked up what the share price was around that time. I paid about $197/share.
