A new Mac user looking for help
« on: July 30, 2011, 08:58:37 PM »
Ok Folks,

Got a question for all of my Mac users out there.  I just purchased a MacBook Pro 13" i5 this week *Praise Break in Eb* and am looking for advice.  I purchased it for school (which I start in 4 weeks) and am looking to also use it for recording and live mixing purposes.  I am wondering what softwares you cats are using for mixing?  I am looking for something that I can use live on stage to run a monitor mix out of and potentially mix a live show from.  I do have Garage Band on it but am not sure what all I can do with it (yet).

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

I suggest you start w/GarageBand. It's already there, and will get you up to speed on recording + playback.
For live situations many Mac users use Abelton Live. There are downloadable demos on the Abelton site...

Garageband is definitely a good start. I myself skipped it completely and went straight to using Logic (deleted Garageband completely to free up some hard drive space) but I hear that both applications are similar.

Yes, Logic's good. Maybe start w/GarageBand if you are new to music software, or go right to Logic Pro if you have experience...

You may also want to send a PM to SirTJ, ArkhamsFinest, and 3rdDay. I'm sure there are a lot of folks that use Macs for that kind of stuff, but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

And btw, hey stranger!!!! :-*

Hey Juse!!  Congrats on the investment!!  What I use especially for Live performances is Ableton Live!!!  I absolutely love it for live applications.  You can manually trigger loops, sequences, tracks, etc.  I actually have it hooked up to SPD-S to trigger each song.  You can also use the SPD-S and trigger locations.  For example, I didn't have a pianist at my church and actually recorded all the tracks for the sequences run at church.  What I did was put locators on for example, Intro, Verse 1, Verse 2, Chorus 1, Chorus 2, Coda, etc. and then assigned specific pads for each locator.   So if the PW leader wanted to go back to the Chorus, I could always go back without any issues.  Hope this helps.  Also, for mixing purposes, you can't go wrong with Protools or Logic.  Take care and God Bless.

Does Garageband have the ability to put 'clicks' in a song? I tried it once but it was hard. Though alot of videos i watched on Youtube, drummers have a macbook beside them and i think theyre using Garageband.

Yes, GarageBand and Band-in-a-box have the ability to put clicks in. It might be found under 'Metronome'. I usually use one of the Drum Loops to record to, although you can record one of the drum sounds (stick click) every beat for a lead-in...

I've done all of my live shows running Pro Tools. Had about 20 or so tracks going with a drummer mix and such.

Digital Performer is actually the best one to run stuff through that program refuses to crash. just make your tracks in something else and run it in digital performer.
