Yeah. U gotta listen to horn players to understand they're placement. I was sitting with my mentor once as he tried to lay down a sax track and he kept doing it over say saying "i keep playing it like a keyboard player. " I'm thinking "but I hear a sax. What's the problem?" Of course I didn't understand until years later. You have to think like a person who plays that instrument. There are things that they would and wouldn't do. The objective is to match that perspective.
Put it this way. I'm a bass player. I can tell often tell when a keyboard player is playing bass on keys. The one that does it RIGHT has me looking all around saying "I can't see the bass player."
