never had a band practice
« on: April 02, 2012, 01:17:18 PM »
Yea I belong to a Church thats never had one.Never know what song will be sung ormaybe never heard of it before. Personally like it that way no note reading no fighting to get it just right  . .Anyways Robben Ford told a story about him as a teenager. he was sitting in a dressing room waiting to  play his first gig with mile davis. He never meet the man or other band members .Never got a song list (450 songs are posible .When miles came to door robben thouht he was getting a song list .instead he asked if he was going out on stage wearig his jeans and tee shirt ?robben said yes and miles  said that he should dress up a little more.Miles wanted his young muscians to make stuff on the fly. I personnely dont like doing solos unless are head muscian gives me the nod she has a great ear and knows when im playing my best with the song going on.My ears are not what they use to be. Anyways I thought I d share Robben Fords story. but my church is talking about band practice in the future because everyone else practises

Band practice....it really works.  But I'm a bit concerned that your church is talking about having practice simply because everybody else is doing it.    There should be some goal or objective that your are trying to achieve other wise you're going to end up with a bunch of musicians who meet up once a week solely for the sake of practicing.  Is there something that the pastor or MOM/Worship leader is trying to accomplish here?

We have a weekly practice and it's mandatory for people to attend if they're playing on Sunday.
I also give out song lists, song lyrics, chord charts and mp3/YouTube links up to a week or more in advance and expect that people listen and learn prior to rehearsal.
That's part of how I serve my team of volunteers.

I'm not Miles Davis nor Robben Ford and neither is anyone on my team, but I used to play with people at another church who would definitely hold their own against both and they all rehearsed as a band each week.
I'm not trying to knock the late Mr. Davis or his band...they did what worked for them...but preparation before the service is a necessity for us and, honestly, the Holy Spirit has our attention better if we're comfortable with what we're doing rather than all be guessing and wondering what's happening next.

Surprisingly, a lot of churches do NOT practice and the level of frustration among the musicians at those churches is no secret.

You're cool Dave.  I never had someone chord out songs at any of the churches that I played for.  Even when I wasn't on payroll, I still had to learn on my own.

I makes you better as a musician, but it'd still be nice to have that  :)

Thought id share the miles davis story. Good point on why start  band practice now . we have some really talented singers who have songs they wrote they just get up and sing them and we just make stuff  as they sing. Think Church might want ous to make a cd. are first Lady said a year ago some one wanted to make a cd of are Church so maybe that could be it? As far as no practicet or song list. It  works with me because I play with another guitarist. sometimes im not inspired to play a big role and I back off volume and comp.,and likewise he does the samething. But the other musians just blow my mind there with every song. But they all started out in church drums at 5 years old.Are 5 years old start out on percussion and on fridays play drums. we have a 7 year old that is amasing. opps he just turn 8 . he plays drums and keys  so I think thats how we get away with what we do kids are actual band members so when there 20 they play like ther 40. hope not boring anyone but havent worked in 8 weeks so this is something todo

no it's hardly ever standard notation, will just be a chord chart/lead sheet or a numbers chart.

This.
If you know your chords and the basics of a chord progression, you can play of most any church-sourced chord chart.

Oh okay...

I know theory, chords, and the number system...even some of the fancy chords.  I feel better about it now  :)

We also use PCO....it is indeed a life saver.  And even without Planning Center, Youtube can be helpful.
