considering that Paul drew from poets and writers of his day to convey the message of the Gospel, and that Jesus himself used terms that were from the theater for their day that would not have been used by a common person without knowledge of said theater, there is ample precedent for using popular culture/art/music as influence.

the last post is grossly misinformed. should you listen to music that is vulgar, explicit and offensive for the sake of "inspiration", of course not. should you use wisdom in every situation, knowing what could cause you to stumble, absolutely. that doesn't mean there is any thing wrong with learning some bb king or john mayer licks.

the statement that "most people here are typical church musicians who don't care about God as much as music" is RIDICULOUS. Unless you have polled every member of this site and have statistical data that backs that statement up, it's at best misleading and at worst and outright slanderous lie. which i'd say is far worse than listening to the "secular" music. you owe every person on this site an apology.

I know most of tdo he people here are your typical church playing musicians that don't really care as much about God as they do music.

There are of thousands of people who play an instrument at a variety of churches.  Virtually all of us do, quite frankly, have a passion for music and are happy to serve in this capacity at our local churches.  But do you honestly believe that the most of us care more about music than God?  I think that all of us should periodically examine ourselves and our motives, but to suggest that just because we are enthusiastic about playing music (and guitars and gear and all that fun stuff) or that some of us listen to so-called secular music means we care less abut our Lord and Savior and that such an position constitutes "typical" behavior among church musicians is a rather ridiculous (or perhaps misguided at best) conclusion.  I'm not saying that there aren't musicians who care more about music than the Lord (and there may have even been a point in our lives when we were among them), but as those who have taken on the name of Christ I feel that we are all seeking to please the Lord.

Ibrought up bb and albert cuz they were there at the begining of the elec guitar and even have scale boxes named after them .I just thouht id recomend the one site cuz I think he explains the scales pretty good. My Wife brought me into the Pasters Ofice and showned are Paster some of the few guitar magaizines I own. Were Pentocastol by the way. He asked  me about the magazines . I stated there are scales in there and maybe they show how some one does a few licks in that scale . He didnt think it was bad. He knows personaly I only own Gospel . And on this site the only nongospel has been like jazz/bluesy no singing as far as I know. I had a Father inlaw whos church declared all 9th chords are of the devil .then the list grew to all extended chords and off beat syncapated notes. Personaly if you play music and everyone is dancing like David did thats what we call having some Church. No I dont mean clubing .And as we say the best part is the word of God coming in the Serman anyways

Your father-in-law's church believes in a variation of the devil's interval except that (it would appear) you can play 7th chords but no extensions.  Do they believe that 9th chords will cause people to start dancing like James Brown?

That church they only get up to go to the bathroom. So getting on up in the spirit and dancing like David is a no no.  From what I understand all jazz in any form is bad. And 7th chords are bad.ect . I brought it up because to show some folks can go to the extreme on what folks can listen to. For instance last night I listen to Grant Green. Is it okay to listen to him hes a jazz person? Some folks would say no .But I was listing to his feelin the spirit cd of spirituals is that okay?some folks would say no.. So I think its stay away from the bad lyrics # 1

I think some folks spend far too much time focusing on what we shouldn't do instead of focusing on what we should do.

In other words, we should spend more time on praying without ceasing and verbalizing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs instead of telling other people "don't listen to jazz" or "don't play 7th chords", etc...
Jesus came to fulfill and undo all of that mess created by the 600+ Mosaic and Rabbinical laws that man could not follow perfectly even on our best day.
Music theory is not always music reality.

Misguided people who believe that minor third intervals in chords are of da debil.
Little do they know that EVERY major chord has a minor third interval from the 3rd to the 5th.
Music theory is not always music reality.

"don't play 7th chords"

Dominant 7th chords have the dreaded "Devil's interval", the Tritone... (Aug 4th/Dim5th - like B - F)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tritone

In the old Meantone tuning, it sounded howlingly BAD...hence the nickname "Wolf Tone"...
