guitar vs keys
« on: April 30, 2012, 07:56:08 AM »
Have a question for the "axe men";preferably the jazz orientated ones who might play some keys:

I enjoy a good jazz guitarist-and have been watching the "licksters and trickster " teachers. Some ReAAllly   good players with blazing fingers!

To articulate those 400 note riffs/lines-is that strictly a matter of picking?Or for those Joe Pass cats-any dif in using the fingers or holding a pick?

It seems to me that the picking follows a pattern(rather than notes) and the other hand moving up/down string/fret position(s) is really the prime mover.

So-anybody have an explanation-I'm going to try to add a Geo Benson vid.http://youtu.be/r0KOzrMUt10

thks Scetch, not playing guitar -hard to explain. That helps-that the picking hand creates the rhythms.

Trying to incorporate how to effect this on the keys, too often endless riffing on the keys gets to be like a typewriter.

Cats like Benson,Klugh,Ritenour always amazed me.

As a keyboard player, there is frankly no way, save the mod and pitch wheel like Sketch said, of getting the articulation of the guitar on a piano. It just won't happen, no matter how much you slur your notes. There is no way to bend a note or create the smooth, sliding sound that a guitar can create.

I do envy keyboardists because you guys can play a million notes at once. :)

Both instruments have their place.
The car, job, house wife/husband are not the reward, God is.

Cool bros+ thks!!

I was wondering, many keys now have "passable"guitar patches.I had been noticing;as I was fooling around with some;the lines actually sounded OK.Not as good as a real player, but OK for working out ideas.

The same lines lacked -using a keys patch. Thanks to your help;I see it's partly due to the physical attributes .There were a few organ/axe combos where the players played the same lines @the same time for a nice effect.Neil Larsen comes to mind.
