Walking bass lines
« on: May 30, 2012, 01:27:06 PM »
Whats up LGM.  Question, walking basslines like in the song "They got the word" by Mississippi Mass, is that chordal/scalar bass line or 1 3 5 7, 1 5 6? What type of bassline is it? How do they but them together, theory wise?

Thanks in advance, for any and all help...

I find that alot of walking patterns can be better understood with some Jazz theory.

The 1/5 walk, do you arpeggiate each chord, or 1/5 the progression?

There's a couple of clips on you-tube.

How about sharing a few patterns?  Say on a F Gm7 C7( or 13 th)

I'm doing this lt handed on keys    F (up) to C (down) A F   2 x's; G A Bb B   C(down) Eb (hold) or hit the E  in 4/4/ time all 1/4's  except the Eb or E which I hold  ;then start over on "1" with the F or next chord.

I am learning to walk myself, but I find Ed Friedland's book helpful (even though I have a lot to get through still): http://www.amazon.com/Building-Walking-Bass-Lines-Friedland/dp/0793542049/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1235602406&sr=1-1

I also found Scott Devine's Beginner Lessons immediately helpful: http://scottsbasslessons.com/walking-bass-lines/walking-bass-beginner-1.html  and  http://scottsbasslessons.com/walking-bass-lines/walking-bass-beginner-2.html

Can anyone do this at 5:28? The bass player at our church used to do this at a fast pace like this.
If you confess the Lord! Call him up (Can't Stop Praising His Name) by PASTOR RONKENOLY
Vision without action is just day dreaming. I miss practicing.

MM-I don't play bass-it sounds like he is just using notes from the riff after pastor Ron ,maybe octaves and slapping?

Yeah I know how to do it but. Doing that is not easy on bass at that speed. Well. The guy at my church would play each note twice in the normal shout run. It's hard to do on keys also. Imagine playing the normal shout run but you play each note twice.

Use several fingers? That's what I would do on keys-3,2,1, or  such for that  machine gun stuff.

How would it sound with a D Minor 7th chord after the c7?

okay I came up with one ...

4/4 Time
F-A-C-A-G-B-D-C#-C-E-G-E ... then turn around and start all over
