I say if it fits your hands and you like how it sounds, how could you not buy it?  ;D

The American Special is a good guitar, but I would rather pay an extra $100.00 or so and get an American Standard instead.  What I like about the Special is the Texas Special pickups and jumbo frets.  I also dig the 70's style headstock and logo.  But with the American Standard, you get Fat 50's (on 2012 models) and a better humbucker.  The Fat 50's and Texas Specials are both equally great single coils, but I think that the Diamond Back humbucker is nicer than the American Special's Atomic humbucker.  And with the American Standard, you get a nice hard case vs. a gig bag.  BTW, I believe that either of these guitars qualifies for a $100.00 instant rebate if purchased by July 31st.

Went to sweetwater.com and it's a $200 difference ($799 and $999).  Two hundred dollars for a different humbucker and a case?  Meh...

$800...wife isn't sure but is okay with it

$1000...side eye from the wife for a year (amongst other things)

...Nah, not worth it.  :D

I haven't tried the highway 1 strat yet...I really just want an updated version of my current fender strat with better staying in tune effectiveness and a humbucker in the bridge.

I've played a couple Highway 1 Strats and Teles and they were decent instruments.
That said, I almost always gravitate towards the MIA Standards or one of the fine MIJ models.

Have you tried American Musical Supply? You can make payments and have the gear in hand at the same time... Wife may like that better...

The only difference between sweetwater and American Musical Supply is that AMS runs a credit check if you're making payments...sweetwater doesn't.

Just something to consider...

I've heard of people getting some amazing deals on the Highway 1's (I think this may their last year)....an American made Strat for about the cost of an MIM Standard.  But I feel that the American Special is priced too high.  The guitar itself is fine and even has some feature that the US Standard doesn't, but when I see that I can get 2011 American Standard for only $100.00 more with a nice case then it's not such a good value to me.

I didn't know AMS ran credit.

I went that route a year ago when I had to convince my wife I needed an electronic drum set. I made a deal too Gibby and over a year later I'm still remodeling the bathroom.  ?/?

When it's all said and done, I'll be paying $640 for my lay-away Fender Pawn Shop '72, including deluxe gig bag.
That's a more than fair price for a guitar that is just one of those special guitars when I put my hands around it.
I can see me liking it more than any of my previous Strats and Teles and I'd like to think that it'll be a keeper. :)

My next purchase is either an Epi Semi-hollow or Fender Deluxe Player's Strat.
