Smart people, help me out...
« on: June 25, 2012, 03:08:57 PM »
I'm trying to explain a situation where a person gives another person something they want, but withholds a key aspect of the thing in order to keep the person wanting more. Sort of like keeping a piece of meat dangling in front of them. I feel like there's some kind of official psychological/philosophical concept or name for this activity, but I can't think of what it is. Anyone know?

Motivation?  Manipulation?  Meanness? Maliciousness?

The last three come from my wife who has her Master's in Marriage & Family Therapy, and majored in psychology.

She also asks, 'What is the purpose behind Person A dangling the carrot in front of Person B?'

Darn! There is a specific technical name for this type of situation. I can't for the life of me remember what it is!

DID NOT KNOW THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I need her help.

Can you make the connection? Nothing major. Just need to pick her brain, as that's the field I'm going into but I don't want to do the Master's, I want to go straight into the PhD - which is proving really difficult.... *sigh*

bait and hook model for marketing

you guy buy a ps3 but you have to continue paying $60 a game to enjoy it

from wikipedia
"This involves offering a basic product at a very low cost, often at a loss (the "bait"), then charging compensatory recurring amounts for refills or associated products or services (the "hook"). Examples include: razor (bait) and blades (hook); cell phones (bait) and air time (hook); computer printers (bait) and ink cartridge refills (hook); and cameras (bait) and prints (hook). An interesting variant of this model is Adobe, a software developer that gives away its document reader free of charge but charges several hundred dollars for its document writer."

i also call it courting... you take the girl out but your not supposed to get any goodies until marriage

PM me what you need, and I'll relay it to her.  Unless it's personal, then I'll PM you her e-mail address.
