Question on a lick on piano
« on: July 11, 2012, 11:05:23 AM »
The music minister in this video was showing me how to play down at the cross and i can follow the chord theory but i have trouble with the camera angle and catching the lick that he does @ 3:53

Rev Nichols teaches "down at the cross" on Piano

Any jazz pianist able to tell me what the theory is behind that kind lick so i can do it in any key?

I hear it a lot in gospel music, like here @ 1:10

Georgia Mass Choir - Walk In The Light

I just cant seem to get the hang of it.

Thank you so much and God Bless

yo MoC;

it looks like an Eb Bb D Dd A line-arp'd across the changes.you slide off the Dd -D -A   pretty common in jazz.if he has an instruction DVD or other you-tube clips that might help.

also-look @ any clip from Sam of Sams' Muzak   sound of joy;he does a lo of that stuff

I don't have any way to do a vid bro-I'll keep an eye out.If I remember correctly-there's a Jimmy Smith video that shows it.

Try just those 5 notes;  Eb Bb( 4 th finger Eb to 2nd Bb)  then 4 th to Db-quick slide down to D using  just the 4 th-then the thumb on the last note.

The D is almost a grace note-bet the timing is messing you up

no way to do a video;try this   4th finger to 2 nd Eb to Bb

                                      slide  4th finger to Dd,quick slide to D

                                       then 2 or thumb to A-the D is a grace note-my bet the timing is why it doesn't sound right
