What Would You Do?
« on: July 12, 2012, 09:12:34 PM »
A new Pastor came to Atlanta seeking to start a Chuch. He's a fellow musician and one of my many teachers. The reason I mentioned that he's a fellow musician is because he uses Music as a way to appeal to everyone and connect with those he can't connect with through his preaching.
He's been struggling to start a church here for a while. I really want to help him. Here's what I was thinking I can do.

I Can plan three events and invite as many people as I can, Spread the word to different churches get a big turnout. With this I can ask for an Offering and support his ministry to get him started. While at the same time those that like the way he runs things can follow him and church up with him.
(Please Feed back on what you think of that as well)

But Here's The Main Problem I'm worried about.

THERE ARE TO MANY CHURCHES. As in to many churches that are all in the same situation, Broke and Can't pay bills. So Say he does get a few families to church up with him. How do I know that he will continually grow and be able to support the bills and the needs of his ministry?

I don't want another struggling church.

I am confident in both his Musician Skills and Pastoral skills... But like I said... will that be enough to keep his church stable?

Is he trying to convert people, or is he looking for people who are already members of a church to join his church?

^^^Good point

"Church Up" is a new term for me.

He (and you if you're thinking of helping him) need to drill down on the actual purpose for starting yet another church.  What is he offering the community or the people he's trying to reach that's not already being offered?  Does he feel that God called him, or is this just something he thinks he's good at?  Did he wait on God's time, or did he just step out and start doing something?

Pastoring is a God-commissioned thing.  I just don't believe that God is going to call you to this particular assignment and not make a way for you to reach the people to which you are assigned.  That said, maybe you are an instrument for all of that to fall into place.

My answer:  You need to pray and see if this is a God thing or just a good thing you're trying to do.  If God sends you to help him, then that's all you need to know.  If he struggles for the next fifty years, that's not really your concern.

Tell him to join one of the thousands of churches in the Atlanta metro area and serve there for a while. What on earth does he have that none of the other churches in Atlanta have? :-\

But yeah if he's determined to go on with his plan he should hit the parks and the streets to minister to the ones who need it most: the lost.

I'm sorry, but I have to agree with Mme Rue and U13 here. Why on earth must he open a new church? What does he have to offer that he couldn't offer under any other church?

When did being a pastor mean you HAVE to have a church of your own?

Dude... :-\

So, there are these two churches in my area, one of which I attend, that possess small congregations, plain and simple.  I've told my wife that we should partner with this other church (we fellowship together quite often, our two churches, that is) because in doing so I believe we could really help the community.

My wife always looks at me with this, 'Negro-you-know-that's-too-much-like-right' face.  :-\ :D

As for combining two churches, I remember a few years ago, I asked my pastor if we could invite another church to join us for our Watch Night service. I just didn't think it made sense to NOT do it together, as at the time, we had much fewer people, and they also have a small membership. Both pastors agreed to it. But it left me wondering, if churches can come together for occasions of fellowship, why not just come together period... especially if they each have 13 members. I mean, think about how many churches have just 13 members.... seriously... what on earth is your purpose? Can you just be real with yourself, oh pastor? Can you be honest and admit that the reason you want to 'pastor' is for power? money? perceived prestige? status? autonomy? authority without accountability?
