You favorite Recording Studio Sofware?
« on: August 05, 2012, 11:15:05 PM »
I have come to learn that I am dealing with some Gospel Music Experts in this forum! I love every last one of you and thank you for all your expertise on my other posts thus far. The main thing here is I'm curios to find out what is the best Recording Software and/or setup that you deem Supreme!

Ok So I'll go first.  ;D

I know that everyone is totally sold on Protools for MAC all across the board for a home or professional recording studio but I'm thinking of going with a Linux Distro?! I have used Linux in the past so the Operating system isn't foreign to me....but never for recording of any kind. I was thinking that being open sourced and freely available for anyone to tweak and make better would provide a more stable and efficient experience for my first studio. Thoughts anyone?

I'm still using ProTools as my #1 mainly because most everyone I work with uses it and having cross-compatibility makes the music making process go easier.

So;the "soft" studio is the way to go?

I've played some with Band in a Box and G Band, just nothing serious.GtD,can you expound a bit on some of this? :

I'm (so far) a live player, having used an old Roland VS  to go back;add/correct parts. What's you're work flow from like from say, just a riff in you're head to a whole production?

How would you start ? drum track, bass line ?whatever

I 've watched a lot of demos of everything from Boss Drum machines to hand recorders. I get the "jam bit" but from there to 64 tracks is a bit overwhelming.

ideas?

Im a cubase power user, been rockin that since the Atari days.

BUT Protools is the one that seems to have the most support.

Not sure what you'll find that has a lotta support on linux.

Not only the software, but the interface(and drivers thereof) as well.

If you're a geek, and can dance around troubleshooting you'll be ok, but troubleshooting gets in the way of the creative juices.

I use Finale for notation, and Logic Express on my older iMac for rehearsal tracks, etc...

some of the above may not be around anymore  :-\ ... also I haven't personally used linux for recording ... I did (laptop died) all my recording in Audacity originally ... which is on linux of course... Some limitations if you want to do multi track recording.

This is what I downloaded first! I Absolutely Love it!!!

I'm using a Presonus Firepod, that let you record 8 tracks simultaneously into the FireWire port on the computer. With Ubuntu Studio already installed, all I did was plug the thing in and it found some free, open-source drivers to make the software work smoothly. So far so good, but still open to suggestions :)
