Men's Day, Women's Day, Youth Day--Por Que?!
« on: August 04, 2012, 05:45:29 PM »
OK. I have been meaning to mention this for quite some time.

I noticed in many of the churches i attended that they tended to have services dedicated towards different demographics.
For example,

Youth sunday they find a young preacher, get the teen choir to sing and have a 5 year old read a poem.
Grandparents sunday they find older ppl to do the same things.
Women's sunday they get a woman preacher who usually preaches about how to be a "woman of God" (as a man these were the most awkward sundays)
.......and so on and so forth............................

Overtime what i saw was that the youth would avoid comming unless it was "thier sunday" and the senior adults would ignore the youth every other sunday.

Womens day and Men's day were writhed in committee meetings deciding what the color and theme scripture would be.

Overall it was very involved.

In my opinion this has worked against the cohesiveness that the body of Christ is supposed to have because every group is more concerned about "thier own sunday"

Does anyone have any idea why this has come about?

Pretty much.  My church does none of this.  Not even pastor anniversary or any of that.

I so need to join that church. OMGn.

After I left my church, they separated the church anniversary from the 'convocation' (don't get me started on the convocation), and added a pastor's anniversary and a pastor's appreciation and a separate pastor's birthday celebration. Plus, we still have the conference that God gave us (the prayer conference) and 4 concerts (spring, summer, fall and winter). It's just ridiculous. I think it's an avoidance measure. Instead of doing what He commissioned us to do, we can just keep ourselves busy and spend all our money doing church stuff.... smh. UGH!

Nope. Fwiw, COGIC convocations are actually amazingly cool (if you can get past the horrific, borderline-offensive offering tactics). I would go as far as to say that COGIC convocations are the best of all the ones I've attended.

Why? Because as a matter of fact i most towns the Black Church is as much or more a social entity as a benevolent or a worshipping one.  In many places, the only real and acceptable social outlet is the church.  People get their self worth, their sense of accomplishment, their opportunity to lead, their association with friends(sometimes who wouldn't be friends otherwise), all that from the church.  You may be a maid at the Peabody, but in church, you are the chairman of the district ushers, and the go to person for ushers in your church.(for example)

The more programs, the more opportunities for all those things. The more programs, the more offerings.  The more programs(relative to the first)the more program chairpersons and the more bows to take. The more programs the more out front your church is.  The more programs, the more fellow shipping and hobnobbing with friends

If it makes people happy, Why not.  In all of the things that people do in church, God and worship should be first.  Sometimes it is not, but it should be.  Next should be the love of people. If those things can be in the proper hierarchy of things, certainly, why not?

Manofchrist101 if you can answer this question you would solve the problem of having four churches on every corner with only 10-20 members each ...

We do those types of services mainly to raise special offerings and to fellowship with other churches. Since we can't be to other church's services, it gives us a chance to experience how other people have church.

If I could eliminate some of them, I would for some of the reasons already mentioned.

end thread.

At our church we have "Men's and Women's Weekend", with a service on Friday, seminars on Saturday and 2 services with guest speakers on Sunday. I don't know what they talk about in the seminars, but last year they used the money raised to help pay off a loan taken out to remodel the church.

We only have Youth Service on 2nd Sundays. Well, it's SUPPOSED to be a Youth Service but....I'm not sure what happened with that. It kinda just turned into a regular service after while.

We do have Women's Conference and Men's Conference and Ministers Conference (where the "new" ministers get ordained). Other than that, we don't do much. Oh and the Youth Conference.

We've NEVER EVERRR had Pastor's Anniversary or Appreciation Services. My Gma never wanted one or thought it necessary, but after years and years of the people pushing her to do it, she gave in. We don't have an anniversary but we do have an Appreciation service for her.

the love of money

well in this case many can argue these programs are not for the love of money but the need for money to keep the various ministries/departments/organizations/denominations/churches/worship centers going.

Nah, our church don't do it for money. If they need money, they'll just ask for it. *shrug* Or do a fundraiser. Dinner sales, yard sells... etc.
