I've always been a fan of CCM, but more so in the 90's when CCM was more rhythmic and diverse. It seems now that while the lyrics are more worshipful, the styles have become more guitar driven and ultimately less diverse. I appreciate artists like Mandisa (who would thrive in 90's CCM) and TobyMac who are keeping diversity alive in CCM

This is true.  It seems to me that as the 2000's, CCM was following that 'urbanized-pop' sound.  I recently picked up a copy of WOW Hits 2002 (for next to nothing) and a lot of songs had that R&B flavor added to.  There were a few guitar-driven rock tunes, but most of the younger acts sounded a lot like their mainstream counterparts.  In particular, Out of Eden's "Different Now" which has a strong Destiny's Child flavor.

Oh man I remember "Send Out A Prayer" maannnn I had a tape I recorded from the radio with that song on it. I used to listen to it all the time, haha.

I have that whole album ("The Call").....on tape no less  :).  Anointed has been a long time favorite of mine though I didn't really listen to much of their music after Nee-C Walls left the group.  I really liked "Under the Influence" and "Anointed".

My favorites are The Call and Under The Influence. Something about the latter just makes it have a timeless feel to it. If they came out with the same CD today, it would sound just about as current and relevant as it did back then. What I liked about Anointed besides the message is that they gave just the right amount vocally in their songs. Not too much, not too little, and their voices blended well.

I haven't reviewed every page, but does anyone remember Jon Gibson? He was/is a CCM artist that had some really good songs that didn't always fit into the mold of most CCM at the time (lots of unconventional chord progressions/song arrangements, at least for CCM), and hiis voice is very similar to Stevie Wonder. Here is one of his more popular songs from back in the day...

I already posted one of my all-time favorite CCM songs (Send Out A Prayer). Just wanted to post some of my other all-timers...

Clay Crosse - He Walked A Mile (loved it on first listen)
Clay Crosse - He Walked a Mile in My Shoes

Rich Mullins - Awesome God (we all know this song, and this is the original recording. It (this rendition) still remains my favorite song of all time)!

Jars of Clay - Worlds Apart (another favorite)

That Clay Crosse song - "He Walked A Mile In My shoes" -  very powerful message.  Several years ago there was a story in the news about this guy who accidentally ran over his daughter and her friend who were playing under a pile of leaves and that song always reminds me of  him.

Love that song! And I was just thinking about Wild Imagination by the same artist. Those songs came out around the time when I first started seriously listening to CCM, and I remember them fondly for that reason. My favorite song by Scott Krippayne is You Have Been Good. Check that song out, it's a good one!

LOL! Yeah he incorporated a lot of that into many of his songs. He was part of the diversity that CCM had in the past.

Some other interesting facts about Jon Gibson (for those who care to know): He was the first CCM artist to incorporate Rap in their music. I've heard that more than once, so that's probably true. He also featured a song on his 1988 CD "Change Of Heart", called "The Wall", which featured a then unknown MC Hammer, before he hit his mainstream success. Look it up on YouTube if you're interested in hearing it, it's there. Friend In You, the one I posted earlier, is on the same album, as well as a remake of the secular song Ya Mo B There, and a duet with Crystal Lewis in her early days (Lost Inside Of You).

Here are a few more songs by Jon Gibson:

God Loves A Broken Heart (this is his first #1 radio single. It's upbeat, and the 80's vibe is strong with this one, but regardless of the time period, a great song is a great song.)
Jon Gibson - God Loves a Broken Heart

From Heaven (Always LOVED the music/chords in this one. Also he did a lot of scatting in his songs, and this is one of those songs.)
Jon Gibson - From Heaven

There For You (One of my favorites, and one of his more recent songs from "The Man Inside", which was his most urban CD that he's done, and his best, imo. The Stevie Wonder vibe is strong with this one, lol)

CCM really was diverse back then.  Even to the point that there was somewhat of an effort for, shall we say, "urban" artists to get more recognition within the CCM community (it was, after all, Christian lyrics set to a contemporary genre of music).  Anointed, for example, featured a "regular" and "urban mix" version of their song "Revive Us" on the "Anointed" album.  Toby Mac (at this time dcTalk was still together) was outspoken about what he felt was racism within not only the industry, but the Church body as a whole.  Overall, the music was a lot more fun than it is today.  Even contemporary gospel (maybe not as diverse) was just so great back then.  Fred Hammond's "Pages of Life", Hezekiah Walker &LFC "Live in New York" and Kirk Franklin's Nu-Nation project are still among my favorite albums to this day.

Well I mean... Chris Tomlin has that "God's Great Dance-floor" song with the dubstep/electro-house snare in it :P And I'm hearing a good bit of the "urban" sound, or what that means nowadays, in the stuff K-LOVE is playing. :)

Hard to believe that Israel Houghton's first album was a CCM effort...and is awesome, too.
Yeah, the late '90s had a lot of diversity in CCM, but the homogenization of the genre is now all but completed: hipsters took over the industry and everybody looks like a beatnik college student or a drop-out of the same age. Then there's the minor '80s resurgence that's happening, too, with Hillsong Young and Free, Elevation Worship and Citizens.
Black/urban artists are all but missing in my opinion. Anthony Evans tried a couple years ago to make a mark, but he doesn't have a beard nor wear a beanie, so he's off the radar now.
I'm not complaining, really...just stating how things are.

And that Jon Gibson above "God Loves a Broken Heart" is just screaming with Todd Rundgren influences.
Music theory is not always music reality.

During the early 2000's, urban and Latin pop sounds became very prevalent in CCM as it was in the mainstream.  It seemed like most of the new artists  of that era were in this vein.  You still had rock, but the record companies were trying to capitalize off the success of artists such as Britney Spears, Destiny's Child, N'Sync, and Back Street so there were (naturally) Christian equivalents (well not really but....).
