Still not buying it, for one simple reason: we are clearly shown Bruce still in cockpit with 5 seconds left before the bomb explodes...remember this is a NUCLEAR bomb that was stated to have a blast radius of 6 miles. Even if he escaped the plane, how does he escape the nuke's blast in under 5 seconds AND swim back?

I loved the film...t'was really my favorite to watch out of the series...but I have to admit the ending was sloppy. For a man like Christopher Nolan who prides his work on realism, there were a lot of stretches (Jim Gordon automatically recalling a 35-year-old memory of placing a coat around young Bruce Wayne based off an ambiguous suggestion?) And the cafe scene still has that cartoonish don't-question-the-logic-just-accept-it feel.

As for the Joker, he never really "ended" in TDKR, so I thought maybe they'd allude to what happened with him. Did he die? Is he in Arkham (or wherever they keep the lunatics)? Did he just disappear?

You are correct, he "ended" in TDK.  Again, Nolan didn't want any talk of the Joker in memory of Ledger.

Concerning Gordon's memory the suggestion isn't ambiguous at all; in fact, it's deliberate.  And, because we have no idea how many times Gordon has placed a coat around a young child (who became orphaned in an instant), the memory could be easy to recall for him.

I can agree with the whole bomb premise being a convoluted storyline.  Because of that, this can't be the best of the trilogy, imo.  It's got questions only Nolan can answer...or, the Riddler.

I said yesterday that I thought TDKR was the best of the trilogy, but in retrospect, I don't think there really is a 'best'. I think the three movies all came together to form one complete story. All of the connections and lead-ins...it was like clockwork (until the end). And it was quite a ride. Hopefully this isn't the end of the Nolan-Batman partnership, though Nolan says it is.

In other news, Nolan says TDKR was inspired by Charles Dicken's "A Tale of Two Cities". Guess I have to go read that now.

You know, in thinking about the bomb, why did they cheer when it detonated in the water?  Isn't the answer that the ocean diminishes/eliminates the danger of the nuclear device?

If so, why is it inconceivable that Bats couldn't make it out in time with some kind of mini 'Batplane' akin to the 'Batpod' as a part of 'Batmobile' (aka 'Tumbler--which I always hated, btw)?

Depends on the bomb. If it was a true nuke, it should've created some type of tsunami or tidal wave, but who knows. They left room for a LOT of assumptions. And obviously the laws of physics weren't exactly high on the checklist. But it's a movie...suspension of belief.

Was a mini 'Batplane' ever shown in the movie (I don't remember seeing one)? If not, that last argument is too big of an assumption to accept. Nolan (both of them) is a better writer than that. Even if it were the case, that still doesn't explain how he escaped the 6 mile blast radius when he was still in the cockpit 5 seconds before the bomb exploded...unless we're to assume that his mini-plane can also travel at the speed of light :D. A nuke is going to hit SOMETHING with some force no matter where it's released.

I read that it may have been some different type of "fusion" bomb which may have allowed the water to minimize it. I'll have to see it again and pay close attention to the details.

Also,  why didn't Batman/Lucius make a bigger "blackout" device to disable the truck and the bomb instead of chasing it across the city like that?

We don't see the 'Batpod' until the 'Batmobile' gets blown up by the rocket launcher in TDK, so *kanyeshrug*.

I'm going with the ocean, somehow, suppressed the blast, and Bats was able to use something to escape the 'blast zone'.

But we actually saw the 'Batpod'...over the course of two movies. We didn't just assume it existed with no reasonable evidence.

I'm almost certain at this point that the ending was purposely left open. A writer of Nolan's caliber (both of them) doesn't leave so many holes without intent. He straight up gave us the Inception treatment.

When do we see the 'Batpod' in the first film?

You guys remember the shiny, corny batman movies?  Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze?  Tommy Lee Jones & Jim Carrey?

They weren't human beings with issues.  They were cartoon characters come to life.  Caricatures.  They were a bad joke and that joke was on US.

Remember how bad Clooney and Val Kilmer were in the role of Batman?  Terrible.  Clooney looked so uncomfortable in the role it was painful.  It wasn't a good fit.  Batman is a very dark character and Clooney just isn't that guy.  Kilmer was closer, but that isn't saying much.  He got 'Dark' part of the Dark Knight, but that was about it.

Then came this series.  Joker...Bane...characters that stole every scene they were in.  I'm going to buy the inevitable Trilogy Box Set on Bluray.

Thank God for Christopher Nolan.

Just caught the matinee with wifey for $6.  My thoughts:

1. You guys think too much...Way too much.

2. Regarding the scene with the explosion, what we see is him in the aircraft.  Before that, we see the clock at 1:30-ish.  Later it cuts to showing the clock at 5 seconds.  Naturally, one would correlate that he was still in the craft at the 5 second mark.  However, the reality is that he could have abandoned the vehicle at any time between (approx.) 1:30 and :05.  In order for the end of the story to work, we have to assume that it was closer to the former and not the latter, giving him plenty of distance from the blast.

3. I remember watching one of those animated series (I can't remember which at the moment), and wishing Bats and Kyle would hook up.  Kinda glad they did in the movie, though at the very end.

4.  I enjoyed it.

speaking f batstuff,

There's a new animated movie, supposedly a intepretation of the the graphic novel that was the game changer(established the gritty archetype) in the Batman universe.
The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 Animated Trailer (IN HD)

Peter Weller (Robocop for those that remember him) voices Bats.

They use that chick ("Robin") in an episode of 'Batman: The Animated Series'.  :o

I figured only fellow Bat-geeks would appreciate this. Poster hanging up in my room:

The Batman face is made out of Joker cards. It's pretty cool.
