A technique I learned was that to play a phrase where you strike a note once, and then you would strike the next note twice and include in more notes to the phrase. I mean its what I pickup from guys like George Benson & Earl Klugh. I notice that it takes discipline at first but once you get used to it you'll get the hang of it. The thing I use to do was always strike every note once each time and in my playing and when I would phrase. It took me years to notice this inefficiency, but now I add in twice the strikes in attacking the guitar. And by this you strike the note your about to play once then the next leading note you strike twice and then followed by striking the next note once. Im just giving example of what I do in a phrase. And I started playing phrases like this and I notice how different and difficult it is at first but now it became very easy to do in songs. I first tried it in George Benson & Earl Klugh song dreamin and I was able to come up some new phrases like never before. Because at the very first it seem like no matter how hard I tried it seem I could never get over the hump of coming up with phrases where every note is struck only once my licks became boring and repetitve like that. Well, no more now!
