"BA-BUM-BA-BUM BA-BUM" Sound
« on: September 14, 2012, 08:18:16 PM »
O.K. So I want to learn the hymn "standing on the promises"

I have a hymnal for the chords but what i am looking for is to put that 12-bars-blues sort of bounce to it.

It's almost like a marching sound. Its also done to songs like:

the battle hymn of the republic,
We've come this far by faith
I will trust in the Lord

and it involves some sort of left handed blues pattern.

It also includes some licks in the right hand.

Does anyone know how to create that sound?

Thank you and God Bless

Some hymnal songs are purposely made within a certain rhythm in order to fit all the lyrics. To change this song into a 12 bar blues feel changes the lyric pronuciation. I've played this song for 30 years and adapted gospel turnarounds into the same pattern you talk. Here is a midi lesson you can learn from as me example.

I love music, any kind of music.

You don't mean Kuh dum  dum  dum  dum, do you?  That would be(with  the left hand) F-C, F-D, F-Eb, F-D, transposable to all keys.  Fits a hundred songs.

Corrected

Whenever i do it it sounds plain and not quite like "black church" gospel sound

Not so well with "We've Come This Far By Faith", I Will Trust, yes.  Jesus is on the Main Line, Glory Glory, etc. Most 1-4-5 songs.

I am, trying yo learn the specific style of how to piano "we've come this far by faith"

Just like in the song "church medley" by donnie mcclurkin...that slow...bluesy feel

Oh, I see what you mean.  I listened to the songs on youtube.  He is using a bass player, but you can approximate what he is doing by getting down into the bass with your left hand on the keyboard while playing the song.  It works well on a keyboard with a split.  Bass on the left and maybe piano on the right.  Notice the numbers of the bass notes on the cd. Then rattle them on the keyboard as you play the song.  Lower the left hand split an octave if necessary.(usually not necessary on a 76 or 88 key board)

So basically just listen to the bass guitar and try to immulate it ?

Yes, or come up with bass runs that fit. T-Block has some posted in a sticky.  However, after listening to the bass runs on CDs, you will soon develop your own.

One can be found under "Congregational Songs Help".  Happens to be the first entry I think.  I am sure there are others, but I don't know exactly where they are posted.  A search might help.  One common bass run is 1-3-5-6, then, going to the four, a 1-2-b3-3, 4(1)-3-5-6 and on. Some just play roots with a run here and there.  There are some good posts out there.  Hope this helps.

If you search for and download the program "Van Basco's Midi Player" it has a virtual keyboard that displays the keys being played. That comes in pretty handy for things like this. If you can read music (Or a piano roll) "Anvil Studio" will let you open the midi file in editable form and look at exactly what's going on.

i have a program for it...i would like the song...we've come this far by faith midi
