Minor chords
« on: October 05, 2012, 08:27:46 AM »
is there a variation of a minor chord that sounds "minor" yet "jazzy" at the same time. I wish I could explain further but can't so I hope you get where I'm coming from......

mM7 (minor major seventh) is probably what you're looking for. It's basically a taking a standard Minor chord and adding the Major-7th degree to it. So...

1-b3-5-7

There's also the slightly less jazzy m7(minor seventh)

thanx sketch I'll have to try that mM7 out. I use the m7 quite a bit but never as the "1" but I may give it a try.

The minor 7th sounds more jazzy to me than a regular minor chord.  The minor M7 is a bit more exotic sounding.  Think of the harmonic minor vs the normal minor scale.

Yeah, if ur looking for a harmonic minor, the m7 is the way to go if you want to jazz up your VI.

Sketch is that for a major or minor progression?

Major.

I was just wondering I use the m7 for the 2 and the 3 in major progressions I can't tell you exactly what minor I use for the 6. For a CM progression  it's a barre chord ring finger 4th string 7th fret and barre the rest down on the 5th fret. I think that's it....I guess that's a regular Am without the 2 top notes.

I regularly replace m chords w/ m7 chords. It's just something I've been doing for years without even thinking about it.
I'll use m9 chords, too, in place of minors.
If that extra m7 note (or 2 of the 9 chord) clashes w/ the melody then I'll play a 'regular' minor chord.
