Peavey Cirrus vs MTD Kingston KZ?... I need your help!
« on: October 16, 2012, 04:44:05 PM »
Bass players...

I have been searching high and low for a quality bass that I will be happy with and will give me the sound I am looking for.  I love the growl of the Ken Smith and I love the smoothness of the Fender (Tony Russell on John P. Kee's 'Blessed By Association' album).

Which is a good mix of the two??  I am a keyboard player, so I don't have the ear of the bass electronics that some of you all have, so I need some help.

There was a youtube clip posted on here a while back of Maurice Fitz playing a Peavey Cirrus for a live recording with Fred Hammond and I absolutely love that sound he had.  On the flip side, I love the look and style of the MTD Kingston and I've seen some krazy youtube clips of that bass.

What do you guys recommend?  I have a budget for a Ken Smith, but to me that would be overkill, so that's how I've narrowed it down to two basses (originally Ken Smith was the 3rd option).

Even if you are biased of a particular bass, I'd love to hear it!!!

thanks in advance!

I can't speak to the Kingston, but i've had a Cirrus for 7 or 8 years, and its done me right! Maurice Fitz. was the one  that got me hooked on em, and i haven't looked back.

I was in a similar spot not too long ago. I wanted a Roscoe or Ken Smith about a month or 2 ago. Life as a Father had other plans for the cash I saved up, and I  "settled" on a used Cirrus. Spent alot less money, great instrument. I have used it the past 3 sundays at Church and to me its very comfortable to play and I love the sound. Now I just have to get my playing up to the level of my instrument.

So I'm late, I understand....

The two basses you've mentioned as examples for the tone you want are very different animals. Jazz basses are smooth, round, can be vintage or more modern (Lull's, Sadowsky's etc...). Cirrus/Smith's are all about modern, bright, snappy, super aggressive tone. That being said.....

Get the Cirrus (personally, if my budget was for a Smith, I'd get that lol...)

I've owned my Alder/Redwood Cirrus for almost a year now I think...best bass I've EVER owned. I put a Flexcore 4-band preamp in it....sounds like the bass I'll play in Heaven!!

I know I am mad late on this thread, but did you end up getting a Cirrus! Bro... if not, get you a Cirrus, I played mine about 5 years ago in the music store, left there begging my wife like a little kid, please please please can I have one! The tone on this bass very much rivals the Smith, and I love Ken Smith sound!
