Will We Ever Run Out of New Music?
« on: November 26, 2012, 10:22:12 AM »
I've often wondered about this myself especially considering how much we tend to rely on some variation of the I-IV-V-VI or I-IV-V chord progressions (even in more "complex" progressions, the I-IV-V is often at the heart of it).  But it also shows that we as musicians sometimes go to futile extremes to try and bring something new to the table and ends up being more of a technical exercise that something that truly captures the hearts and ears of listeners.

Well, the Bible says there's nothing new under the sun, lol. And also what's new to some may be old to others and vice versa.

I think (and this was pretty much the point of view of the video) that despite the nearly limitless combinations of melody, harmony, and meter.....there is only so much of it that we can appreciate.  That's the reason why so many songs have so much in common.

Didn't see the video but this is a very good question. Sometimes I do wonder...

Not to mention the different ways you can play one individual note. Bending, muting, etc.

I don't think we'll ever run out of new music. Djent has only been around for a few years, and when it immerged it was something completely new and fresh. We may hear recurring chord progressions, but the delivery and emotion behind it will always be different.

There are no two humans alike. No exact matches. How could we ever run out of variables to keep creating?

We're spoon-fed force-fed the type of music "they" want us to like on a constant daily (hourly?) basis, and it's efficient and profitable to keep people in a musical box and churn out easy "familiar" music which the public has been groomed to consume.

;)

Popular music sells.
