It depends, but my pedal board is pretty basic consisting of overdrive, distortion, chorus, delay, and soon to be added a new wah.  These pretty much cover all sounds I need, but an octave pedal could be useful from time to time.  I'll also be adding a boost to replace the compressor that is currently serving as a sort of boost.

I need all of the ones that I need and I use all of the ones that I have.
I play at church, I play in the studio and I play out at gigs and I play a variety of styles (rock, blues, country, metal, jazz, etc...) and all of the different pedals and amps and guitars help me to get the sounds that I need to get.

So and EQ pedal would be better than a compressor here?

An EQ pedal could be used as a boost, too, as could a compressor, but each with their own limitations and drawbacks.
The Boss EQ pedal could be left flat and then only the output signal could be boosted via the level control and you could tweak out any excessive frequencies, too, but the circuit may not give the cleanest, fullest boost.
A compressor can boost the signal as well, but it will tend to bring the noise floor up, too, and would not be a clean boost at all.

So which one do you recommend getting?

IMO, a dedicated boost pedal is the best option OR an overdrive pedal that cleans up well.  There are also overdrive/distortion boxes that have a boost function built in.  Another thing you can try is to turn up your amp and use a volume pedal to get a volume boost for solos .

I already have a distortion pedal already. Gtrdave was talking about and EQ pedal or compressor to do the job. I did have and volume pedal before - you know. I usually used it to volume swells, but now I really don't think I need that at all, but who knows.
