What is that chord hes playing pt 2
« on: May 17, 2013, 12:36:38 PM »
Hi guys. I was listening to Marvin Winans Draw me Close to You / Thy Will be Done song and I was listening to guitar player play and I was trying to figure out that chord he's playing at 2:28 and he plays the same chord at 2:38. Can anyone can help out on this? For I wish they had a phone where they would tell you what chord a person is playing by putting your phone to the radio or something. lol

*NEW* Marvin Winans - Draw me Close to You / Thy Will be Done

Ebm11

You were right about that chord gtrdave. I cant figure out why I cant tell what chord people be playing and who would've guessed that it would be an minor 11th chord - and that is unbelievable gtrdave! How many tries did it take to know it was actually that chord? Man gtrdave now we're on the same page because I can understand where your coming from. It is amazing how God is doing an amazing work in you and I want him to work in me, too. It is amazing to me how us gospel guitar players can help each other out on this website. Awe man I feel the love. And I think that this was the voicing he was playing since you said Eb minor 11 gtrdave I automatically knew what type of Eb minor 11 voicing to play. Let me know what you think?

Ebm11

E -4
B -6
G -6
D -4
A -6
E -x

When you try to figure out these chords, do you happen to have your guitar at hand to experiment until you get it? Just out of curiosity.

Im sorry I do not! Because sometimes it be too hard to actually get it to sound like the actual person. But once gtrdave said minor 11 I automatically knew what type of voicing it probably was.

For me, it comes from years of playing and listening, listening and playing.
Here's the thing: there are only 12 notes that we use in our modern music, from A to G#. For every note you hear, you've got a one-in-twelve shot of knowing what note it is.
If you can become very familiar those notes, you can hear most anything.
Start with playing simple scales, playing them over and over and over until you memorize them with your eyes closed. Memorize the intervals and how they sound and, very important, try to be able to sing them or hum them.
Once you get the notes in your brain to the point where you can speak them out, you're on your way.
Then expand to more scales and arpeggios and chord voicings and so on, playing them over and over and over until, again, you can play them with your eyes closed and you can pretty much speak them or sing them out.

Again, there are only 12 notes. But it can take a lifetime learning how much you can do with just 12 notes. :)

WOW! :o That is a lesson in all by itself. That is one of the reasons I want to go to school for music. Thank you gtrdave for the lesson learned.
