Dennis chambers "Serious Moves" helped a lot after a while, because he explaned how he built up speed ( pillow, a quarter, two telephonebooks ...)

Also Steve Gadds "Live at PAS" with his famous solo and the Gadd-groove

Last but not least thomas Langs "Creative Control" explains effective training in combination and MPOs(Multi Pedal Orchestrations)

Jim Chapin's Speed, Power, Control, Endurance video. He explains the MoellerTechnique. Dave Weckl video "Back to the Basics." This has helped me a great deal along with the book "Stick Control." How are things going with the metronome. Good luck!

Thanks.  I learned a great deal on how to use it from this guy I'm taking sporatic drum lessons from.  And also, we have another drummer at our church that's studying percussion...so he'll be showing me some stuff too.  Basically you have to have someone show you how to use it, if you don't completely know rudiments and notes.

The Jim Chapin vid is good BUT...

Do not look for a video to teach you speed . Speed is a by-product of control. Look for a video on control.

That would be -
  • Dave Weckl: How To Develop Technique
  • Virgil Donati: Power Drumming
    • Steve Smith: Drumset Technique and the U.S. Beat
    • Thomas Lang: Creative Control

Again speed is a by-product of control. If the notes are not clean and in the right place you will not gain speed. True speed also shows endurance other wise you are just quick. Quickness deals in short term bursts. Speed is long term. Fast/Quick =licks, while Speed/Endurance=Rudimental Control.

It is the equivalent of a Worl-Class hurdler... If the strides are not exact and equal distance apart and in the groove he/she will clip the hurdle and fall eventually. THe point is to be clean and fast not run over the hurdles to get to the finish line... that doesn't take skill. You don't cast out demons being sloppy you don't heal people being sloppy inan attempt to be fast. Consistency is the key. Sureness of technique.

Thanks Sabe. I thought I mention "Contol was key to speed." Good looking out Sabe as always. Peace

I am still waiting for my book to come in: Stick Control by Stone. Next on the list is Creative Control by Thomas Lang. That is what I will be practicing with for the next few months.

God Bless.

When it comes down to it Stick Control or Joe morello's - Master Studies and the metronome are the truth on the this. If you never learn to relax it want matter. If you don't want it it don't matter. If it ain't in you... IT AIN'T IN YOU... So get to asking God for it and if you don't hear from Him turn the click back on and keep practicing,  ;D

Man, I want it baaaaad!!!  I just need to practice on a set during the week away from the church.  I want to know when to chop and when to stay in the pocket.  I want my chops to be clean and consistant.  Yo Sabe, call me this weekend.  I should be at home.  Man, that tax money is coming soon....I can't wait!!

Work with the click and say practice 8-12 bars (mearsure) verses of groove and 4 bars of chorus (transitioanl fill/chopping ) that keeps the refence to the original groove.
Listen to some really good music like Micheal White or Billy Johnson playing with Maze. When to groove and when to chop is all dependent on the song structure and where the melody is going. Everything should support the song even if it is a percussion piece.  Study the Drumbassadors or an drum corps.
