For the snare experts out there...
« on: March 14, 2005, 03:48:21 PM »
I have a piccolo snare (3"x15") and right now I am using evans G2 double coated head(I presume)...a friend of mine have a 2-ply Aquarian(i think that's the name...u can tell i haven't played drums in a while    ) and it sounded pretty nice...I kinda want to say that I want a bright sound...Here's the question..What's a good drum head for a brighter sound or the G2 is just fine to use....Also, what u suggest for the bottom head? right now i am using tama..any suggestions for that as well? I want to change my heads pretty soon but i do want to keep my G2 if i don't have to change it...

Thanks!

My experience has always led me to single ply heads for a brighter tone. Are you sure that's a 15" snare. I ask because they are uncommon. I know Tama makes one.  It's called a super piccolo I think. Anyway, I've always like Evans G1 coated on top and a Hazy 300 on the bottom for a general application musically. (AMBASSADORS top and bottom if you're going with remo). Again you may have trouble finding 15" snare side (bottom) heads. They make them, but they're hard to find.

single ply head man, that's it...evans g1 coated or remo ambassador.for the bottom try a thinner head such as the remo diplomat snare side.and IF you can afford try a snare with more wires.THAT will brighten things up!!!

i would not recomend 42 strand snare wires for a piccolo. Extra wide snares always mute the resonance big time, and such a shallow depth will make it difficult to control sympathetic vibrations on that drum. I suggest you stick with the stock snappy snares or if you want put down a little money get some PureSound wires. I put puresounds on all the snares I build. And definitely go for a single ply Batter head on that drum. Piccolos are meant to be just that; higher pitched so don't be afraid to crank it a little tighter than your standard size snare and watch that sucker really crack.

forgot to mention Evans' Reverse Dot snare head or Genera, and Genera Dry. All great heads for snares. Really check those out!!!

Right, but he's talking about Piccolo snares on this one. The snares you listed  above would be perfectly OK with the extra wide stuff. Just wanted to make sure he doesn't buy something he won't need. PureSound came out with a 30 strand set and I have yet to try them, those might be a good balance. I still don't think that more strand will brighten tone. I don't see how that would work. It would definitely liven it up some, and make it more sensitive.
