I went ahead with the p bass and I appreciate all the advice. The store had a 4 string version I liked but it didn't have the newer pickups in it. It is a fender so I'm sure I'll be happy with it.

All4, you seem to have gotten a very good deal.  Fenders are good basses that hold their value well.  If for some reason it turns out that it doesn't meet your needs, you will not lose so much to depreciation that you couldn't exchange/trade/sell it for another brand without taking such a big loss.  Most reviews that I have read about them are good.  Hope it works out well for you.  Let us know how you like it when you have played it a bit and you have time.

Congrats on the purchase A4HG, I hope you like it. Like Berbie said, if you don't you shouldn't lose much value....honestly, if you find out in a few days if you don't like it, GC may let you return it for a store credit. With $900 you should be able to find a bass that you'll like.

Congrats again!!

p-bass sounds good distorted and played with a plectrum. I wouldn't really recommend it as a main ax for anyone who isn't doing  rock and/or old-school motown stuff as their main gig, though.
... lies the entrance to "Garloz"

That hasn't worked for me.  :D My basses sit in the closet although I pick up the 4 string every blue moon. Lately I have been practicing acoustic guitar doing Barre chords. It gives my hands a good work out since I have not been practicing keys much. Congrats on the new bass!
Vision without action is just day dreaming. I miss practicing.

Well it depends for what type of music...I've seen more Jazz basses out there, especially in gospel, r&b, jazz, etc....The P-bass was definitely the first of Leo Fender's revolutionary designs, and was probably the first popular electric bass (had to do report on Fender basses, don't mind me lol).

P-bass 5 strings, ESPECIALLY Fenders, are commonly lamented for their B strings....I'd definitely play one before buying. You might like how they sound.  P-basses generally have one main "tone." I wouldn't say they're very versatile. Jazz basses are way more versatile and sound better IMO. See if they'll give you an American standard J-bass for the same price.....

Thaddues Tribbett plays a P-bass....I don't think it's a Fender though, so you can definitely get a nice tone out of one....

I've bought/sold/traded a bunch of guitars on Talkbass....with your budget, you can probably find a used $1500 bass on there. Generally people have good reputations on TB and are honest, I've only ever had one bad transaction, and it really wasn't the other party's fault.

Again, I'd suggest the Jazz, or the Brute lol. My opinion of course.

I agree with this. The Jazz will offer you more tonal options. I recommend that you take your time and try several basses.
Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.
