Playing on other peoples equipment
« on: October 14, 2013, 08:06:20 PM »
Is it just me?

Whenever I go to another church with my choir that has a bass rig, it seems like other bass players have a great sound, but when I get ready to play I feel like I sound like trash. I adjust and adjust and I cant seem to get it quite right. Either too boomy and undefined or too trebly and tinny. Never a good balance.

It could be that hearing the other players from the audience and hearing myself from right in front of the speaker may make the difference (not sure how to test that out). Or it could be that I just totally suck at adjusting my bass to play on other equipment.

Has anyone else had this experience? If so, any tips to share?

As I read the first paragraph, my first thought was what you wrote and I highlighted in the second paragraph.  Here's how I have come to that conclusion on a number of occasions.  I've connected through a wireless and walked through the whole sanctuary seating area.  Originally started doing this to work on sound balance issues with all the instruments and voices in my choir.  I noticed my tone sounded a lot different from the pews than from right next to the amp.

Now that my son plays most of the bass work with my choir I've noticed the same thing.  When I'm showing him a part, or standing near him, the tone sounds a bit stuffed.  When I move out to the pews, his tone is a lot more crisp.

I can't speak to the bass, but my keyboards all sound better when someone else is playing them and I am sitting out in front of the keyboards/amps.  The first time this occurred to me I was shocked at the difference.  Not that they sound bad when I am playing, but so much better when I am front and center of the amps.  This is not relative to player skill. Some are better, some not.

Normally, when I am playing, I am behind or aside and behind my amp.  I assumed that to be the cause of the difference.

like Malthumb, my tone also sounds a lot better the further away from the amp you are!.
