V shape or C shape guitar
« on: March 08, 2014, 12:43:10 PM »
Hi guys. I was wondering which one is more better to play on between a V shape and a C shape guitar neck? I really love the gloss finish on the V shape guitars, which makes the guitar looks pretty. But what Im concern about is the feel of the neck on some of those guitars. Literally, all the fender 50's and 60's Stratocaster have V shaped guitar necks.

I prefer V-necks and I like the satin finish over gloss. I'll typically use 0000 steel wool on the back of a glossy neck to smooth it out as the gloss tend to be too sticky feeling to me.
V-necks are common to '50s Strats and various Custom Shop models.

Could you tell me if you have a V neck guitar? And how does it play? I'm supposed to be getting a new guitar pretty soon and one of my friends is telling me stick with the C shape guitar necks. He says it is a lot smoother and faster, but he hasn't played on a V neck guitar. What are your thoughts?

Modern C all day every day for me with a satin finish.

All three of my Strats have different necks and I like them each for different reasons, but my hand just fits the contour of the V-neck better than a C or D shape.
My two favorite Fenders (neither of which I own, but would like to someday) are the Jimmy Vaughn Strat and Eric Johnson Strat. Both are soft V-necks.

Get the guitar that you like and your hands are comfortable on. Don't worry about the style until after you've decided what you like based on playing it.

I like a thin D profile, but I have small hands.  I use a high quality auto wax on my guitars, and keep a clean terry washcloth in my guitar case and wipe down my guitar when I get done playing.  I prefer a smooth slick neck.
