Musicians and singing

Is it me or are most musicians not good singers? How is that possible? No shade :)

I picked up an instrument at my church so my mom wouldn't force me to sing in the choir

That's probably why they picked up an instrument.  I dunno. I don't have the greatest voice.  I can carry a tune.  But, I'm more comfortable behind my instrument.

Some musicians are able to get parts to songs right and teach but lack the talent in singing. You can know how to do something without actually being good at it.

Yea, I had a friend of mine, in college, who could play the piano like nobody's business but the boy had little to no vocal skills.  He could sing bass a little bit...a VERY little bit.  :D

I think the singing comes first. That's where you get that ear for music. Then you can transfer what you hear to the instrument and go from there. You don't have to be a good singer, but at least know how to carry some kind of tune.

The best musicians that I know are actually all equally good singers!  My brother-in-law has perfect pitch as well.  You sing a note and he can tell you what key it is.  Where I live now is very quarter-heavy, so most musicians sing and play anyway.

Great topic!

Me personally, I've never considered myself a great singer. I sung in the youth choir growing up and then went years without singing (even in teaching parts in the choir). Late 2012 is when I started singing the parts and it has greatly improved the choirs I work with. Every now and then I'll do a lead on a praise team song but I don't consider myself a lead vocalist. I sing enough to teach parts.
