Wanted to revisit this thread with some Bible verses in Corinthians that may apply to whooping.
1 Corinthians 2:4 (the whole chapter 2 is interesting actually)
"And my message and my preaching were very plain. Rather than using clever and persuasive speeches, I relied only on the power of the Holy Spirit." NLT
"And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power" NKJV
I think if not led by the Holy Spirit to whoop, whooping can reduce the effectiveness of a message significantly. It then becomes a clever human way of trying to "drive home the point", "put icing on the cake", "close out strong", or basically persuade and/or excite people. I have even seen preachers (sometimes in amazement of other whoopers) set aside time to "practice" whooping which I don't agree with. From what I've seen, pastors and ministers usually have limited time - and the time spent practicing whooping would probably be better spent digging deeper into God's word.
Also, In many cases, expert whooper = increased membership, depending on denomination and cultural background of the church. This makes whooping even more attractive in certain circles.
Anyway, I do believe that the good news is definitely something to be excited about! But as Paul said, a plain message delivered by the Holy Spirit through the speaker - with no icing or clever wordplay - is enough to display God's power. After all, only the Holy Sprit is capable of changing the heart of man. Also sometimes messages may not cause changes in the lives of those who hear until later. Just because the message is not accepted with a shout, amen, or "you betta preach!" doesn't mean it wasn't effective.
Personally, the most powerful things that I have received spiritually were said with no whoop. And I don't think sermons always have to end on a "High" or "Happy" note. Some times the sermon needs leave the congregation convicted instead of high...
Lastly, it infuriates me when I hear pastors and ministers (namely in the COGIC denomination) say that people can't preach unless they whoop. That's pure nonsense according Paul and really makes me question their position. I'm COGIC and It's almost like a show/competition sometimes with the whooping... It's sad.
Anyway that's just my 2 cents. Merry Christmas 2 all and God bless your 2015!!!
